PUG 406 I.9TD - Strange Noise - keyscoob
I have a PUG 406 1.9TD 1998. Today I noticed for the 1st time a clicking noise behind the dashboard/glovebox on the passenger side. Its a strange one this, a series of 8 or so audible 'clicks' then a short (second or so long) faint mechanical whiring noise. This is all then repeated over and over again.

Any ideas at all as to what this may be?

cheers...

Not familiar with the 406 but could it be associated with the heating & ventilation system ?
Does the noise change if you select windscreen or footwell vetilation or hot/cold or recirculation.
It sounds like a servo motor that has gone past its stop point.

Its the small heater flap motor.

There is a flap under the pollen filter that stops air coming in from outside which has a little motor to open & close it.

The plastic gears on the motor strip the teeth & that starts off the clicking nosie.

You can either get a new one £120 ish & 2 hours of Peugeot labour to fit it.

Have a hunt in a scrapyard & fit it yourself.

Disconnect it & leave the flap open.

Or you can remove it, go down your local model / hobby shop because Tamya model cars have gears which fit & are stronger.

Good luck because its a right pig of a job to change.

HI, m8

Thanks for the uplifting information :) Have you ever had a feeling that you should have stayed in bed for an entire week! Mobile phone nicked, £250-00 repair to central heating and now this, all in seven days :)

I have taken the glove box out OK as the sound seems to be coming from behind it. Can you tell be how to remove the part of the dash assembly that is behind the glove box? If this is where I need to be.

Cheers

Carl

Ive never done a 406 one, Ive done a couple on the 405s though.

Its a small black box held in with 2 screws, with a brown plug with 3 wires coming out of it.

If you send me your email address to me I will send you back a picture of what it looks like.

I still have the old one from my motor, lol

My email address is in my forum profile.

I cant find the old motor so I cannot do you a picture, sorry.

No worries, I'm sure I'll eventually find it. I'll buy a Haynes manual as I am sure that will tell me how to get behind that part of the dash.

Thanks

If you remove the trim under the glovebox thats held in with 3 black plastic push rivits, you will see the heater blower motor.

You can remove the blower motor if it makes thing eaiser, 1 x brown plug & 3 screws is all that holds it in.

The flap motor should be above the blower motor on the left hand side of the heater assy.

Found it and disconnected it for now. What is the function of this motor? What part does it play in the heater system? Would it be OK if it was just left now?

cheers

There is a flap behind your pollen filter in the outside air intake for the heater.

The motor opens & closes this flap to let more or less air in to the car.

Its all controlled by the heater assy, helps keep the temperature stable in the too.

It should be ok to leave it dissconneted but make sure the flap is in the open position to let fresh air into the car.

A trip down a scrapyard will turn up another one, Most Peugeots & Citroens with aircon will have this part fitted.

Or your might turn one up on the net, cheaper then the Pug dealer option.

Tonight, I have heard a ticking noise coming from behind the left hand side of the dashboard, as described originally in Keyscoobs post. (My car is the same but with a different engine.)

Keyscoob, did you manage to fix your car yourself and can you give me any more pointers other than are already listed by LeePower, as it sounds as if I have the same problem as you had.

Did you fix it with a second hand unit or did you get a cog from "Tamya" and repair?

Any help would be appreciated.
