Just recently, and intermittently, the dashboard headlight indicator has started to flash for no reason whatsoever. Not a regular flash, more a kind of can't make its mind up kind of flash. The headlights and dashboard back lights have not come up at the same time as far as I am aware, this only happens to the one green light.

Turning off the engine and restarting has cured it, as has switching the headlights on manually (normally on auto) and then off again.

Has anyone else had this? Happened twice yesterday (given that I only used the car three time that is quite a high percentage)

Worth mentioning to the dealer as still got another year warranty? (Local dealer seems quite good at fixing the various recalls/ leaks/ non working reversing lights/dodgy indicator stalk etc that have needed to be done.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated, I am just concerned that what is a little irritating problem now may become a much bigger issue later.

Hi

It might just want the BSI software updating, Take it to your local dealer & ask.

You are lucky having a helpful main dealer. The one I used to use would deny there is a problem, or would bodge it by butchering the rear floorplan with tin snips to replace a fuel pump, all this on a year old car. I too have had dodgy warnings, oil level, outside temperature, fuel level readings, intermittent radio, noisy air conditioning compressor, burning fan control modules, leaking radiators. Peugeot "customer services", what an oxymoron, did not want to know. After many Peugeots, this will be the last.

The fuel pump has been modified since the first HDI 406 was launched, The new one is bigger & wont fit through the hole under the rear seat like the first HDI pumps did, Peugeot mechanics are ment to drop the fuel tank to change the pump.

The reason Peugeot didnt make the hole bigger was the 406 didnt have long left to run in production before the 407 was launched.

Peugeot customer services are not very good at all. Its not even worth ringing them.

Agree with the comments about both Peugeot dealers and Head Office - I've had several 405/406, all company cars. I'm so glad that it's not my money/time/risk, but now we're being forced to opt out of company cars I've also told Peugeot Head Office 'never again'. They don't appear to care.

Talking of weird electricals, my 99 406 HDi started randomly coming up with 'low brake fluid' on the display. Eventually traced the problem to dirty contacts in the microswitch on the handrake. The microswitch is a pig to get to but a squirt of WD40 solved the problem. Other than that, no problems in over 90K - until the aircon condenser sprung a leak last week. A new one fitted is being fitted as I speak at a cost of £320.

Hi Mike,

Could you let me know what's involved in accessing the handbrake microswitch, or if the Haynes manual is sufficient in detail to do this effectively? My '99 406 has been doing the same thing for the past month or so and I was just about to hand it off to a mechanic!

Thanks!

Balford,

Using the limited info in the Haynes manual (page 9.15, ch 18), I unscrewed the 2 torx screws at the rear of the centre console and some of the screws/bolts in and around the area of the gearstick/ashtray. Also, you'll need to release the electrics to the airbag key switch/coin holder thing beside the handbrake. You need to raise the rear of the centre console about 6 inches. The microswitch is clipped into a metal bracket. If you carefully bend the bracket up, you can unclip the microswitch and slide it out. Mine had a resistance of about 25 ohms across the closed contacts but a good squirt of WD40 through the top while pressing the plunger followed by repeated pressing of the plunger seems to work. Otherwise, it's a new microswitch. Good luck. Let me know how you get on.

Thank you Mike, I'll try this tomorrow and will keep you posted.

Hi Mike,

Glad to report that your directions worked a treat - the annoying 'Brake Fluid Level Low' message and incessant beeping is no more!

As a point of interest to anyone else trying this, it's possible to remove the microswitch without bending any brackets by:

* pulling the handbrake fully up;
* pushing the microswitch plunger fully down,
* unclipping the back of the switch, sliding forward, up then out.

I did remove the entire console from the car though - seeing the mess underneath there meant that I couldn't leave it unclean :)

Thank you very much!

There is a known problem on multiplexed Citroens with the indicator / headlight switch, which is known as COMS 2000 - I am pretty sure this is shared by Pugs. It suffers internal mechanical failure which throws the multiplexing into a tail spin and leads to all sorts of odd faults (head lights on when they shouldn't be, intermittent indicators etc). Might be worth mentioning to your dealer!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

My HPI 02 model suffered "auto headlights activated" warning message coming on at irregular intervals. Dealer fixed it Friday and said the microswitch in the indicator stalk had welded closed.
Simple cure but typical of the breed it seems.
