My nominations include, but are not limited to:-
1. That awful blue talking telephone for Lombard Direct. 2. The dreadul gormless couple in a Golf for Direct Line
Other suggestions welcome!
----------------------------------------------------------------
I quite like these adverts:
1. The Honda W. Heath Robinson-esque one
2. The Ford Fiesta moon landing
3. The Corsa hide-n-seek game
4. The Jaguar evolution one with the animal skulls
5. The Churchill comedy aliens (\'Go HOME!\'... \'no\'.)
6. The new Peugeot one with the toy-style cars
7. The first Mini adventure ad with the alien invasion
The \'shallow grave in the woods at midnight\' nominees would be:
1. The \'Quote me happy\' range
2. Saga, for claiming that age is synonymous with ability
3. The miniature Polo with the moggy
4. Ads with \'Volkswagen\' and \'Reliable\' on the same screen
3. ANYTHING with Michael Winner..
|
The AA ad with Whistling Jack Smiths "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman" annoys me, as I keep whistling it for hours after hearing it!
|
|
That churchill ad creases me up... BUT it only works cos of that very last.... 'NO'
I'm afraid I would consign all of the others to a big hole :s
|
|
3. The Corsa hide-n-seek game
I enjoy that coz the Corsa ends up in a skip ;)
6. The new Peugeot one with the toy-style cars
Play time is over? So an advert to say 'Hi, our car is dull'? I saw a Pug 407 behind me on the road the other day. Had a moment of panic when I thought it would swallow me whole...
|
Yes every time I see the new 407 i expect to see Robert Shaw chasing it in the "orca"
|
I saw for first time last night ad for car but cannot remember what. What drew me to the ad was a really happy whistling thing that was going on throughout. I don't get drawn to buy by ads, but if I was, this one would be the one. Reminded me of another ad a couple of years back that had that famous whistling song in it - again can't remember what they were advertising, but I could certainly whistle the tune for you if the site had whistling facilities.
It wasn't an annoying ad (this latest one), it was a fun one, and I liked it.
|
Annoying Advert today is
Norwich Union Direct with Dave from the Royle Family. Why does he nod to the nearside when he says he scraped the offside of his mate's car?

|
HR,
With all that whistling, I suspect it was probably the one for the AA.
|
Which, if you want to find it is called "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman" and is by Whistling Jack Smith. Think it's from about 1967.
|
Yup, now you come to mention it, Mark, i do believe it was indeed the AA ad.
Thanks for the clarification, pdc - that's a strange title but I guess the artiste's name is quite appropriate.

Oh yeah, the car is as dull as a box of broken plates but the advert is exceptionally stylish - I love the scope and diversity of what's going on onscreen. If you ignore the pug and watch the background it's a great piece of visualisation :) Same for almost all the adverts I mentioned really - they wouldn't make me buy the cars but as creative exercises they're interesting.
|
The Renault Laguna ad with Frank Sinatra singing 'Come fly with me' aggravates me no end.
Michael Winner aggravates me no end - not the advert , just Michael Winner.
- and why call the company esure - is it after a sneeze?
More than - More than what?
And to think people get paid to think up these adverts and company names.
|
More than - More than what?
Premiums More Than anybody else's!!
My least favourite is the current Astra ad with the "Go This" "Go That" malarky. My response is "Go disembowel yourself!" (well, it's not really, but the true dialogue would never get past the mods! ;-)

The one with the toy cars is quite good, the wooden coupe is right up my street.
Better still is the music, anybody here know what/who it is?
|
Dave, it's 'Can You Trust Me' by The Film.

On the subject of car adverts, was having a discussion at work the other day.
Can anyone remember an advert for a hot hatch, think it might have been a Ford, when the car is on the ramp and the engineer / technician (sorry Aprilla) is cranking up the horsepower until it reaches a certain figure. This figure then flashes up on the "display" at the side of the ramp.
We think it may have been for an XR3i or RS Turbo and perhaps 130bhp?
Anyone remember differently?

That ad was the (re)launch in 1991 of the Ford Escort RS2000, the figure on the display was 150(BHP) and the punch line was "The legend is back"

Pologirl,
Many thanks for that info, PoloGirl. I've just had an e-mail back from Peugeot telling me the same thing, because I happen to like the music, too!
By the way, if anyone is interested they can download the music, The Firm - Can You Trust Me (sadly only the first minute), from the following location:

Happy Listening!

Hi PoloGirl
I wonder if you can help me? I have an annoying song in my head and need to find out what it is so that I can delete it from my brain. I happened upon this site and noticed that you seem to know some car advert songs.....
I do not know car it is! but the advert has children singing the song and the last shot is of the car driving through the woods? and I think the word 'Curious'. The bit of song stuck in my brain is something like... 'Ohh what you want, you gotta know what you want' Those are probably not the words but it is driving me MAD! If anyone can help? Sorry for this not being a technical car question!
Thanks Denise

I'm pretty certain the ad was for the Suzuki Grand Vitara but the only place I can find it online so far wants £15 from me to join before they will show it!
Anyone else?
|
Thanks for that, I have now found out it is Mamas and Papas, go where you wanna go!

I don't know if this has been aired your way, it is an English ad that appears on our local cable a lot and which annoys the hell out of me. It is quite long for a commercial. It features a teacher and a kid to explain how selective skills are developed by matching kindergarten shapes. It then proceeds to show that the cognitive processes thus learned are sort of hard wired and new relationships have to be retaught. Segue to businessman being shown pictures of badgeless luxury cars, oh that's a Lexus, a BMW, a Merc etc. Then they show a VW Phaeton with the badge on it and he says oh that's gotta be a BMW etc etc.
It's infuriating, first of all because of its exploitation of children's learning processes (demeans them) and second of all because who on earth would buy an expensive car with a VW badge on it? Definitely not what you'd want to be seen at the golf club in hereabouts. (I say old chap, mine's another G & T and don't spare the G, oh and by the way took a look at your new wheels. They still make Beetles in the Congo or somewhere, don't they......)

What about the annoying Vauxhall one with that bald bloke who looks like Marco from Big Brother. What's his name?
|
That one with the Corsas racing with the irritating voiceover* has just been on. It makes me seethe.
* - The Corsas weren't racing an irritating voiceover. I mean the ad had... ach you know what I mean.

ALL adverts on TV are annoying! Yes I know they pay for the rotten programmes!

The recent BMW ad with swirly kaleidoscope patterns makes me feel nauseous.
And I've no idea what the message is supposed to be.
The Renault ad where the driver twirls the climate control to 17 degrees then sets off with the sunroof open. Idiot.
I like the mini adventure series but nothing surpasses the Montego advert of the 80s where Russ Swift handbrakes the car into a tiny parking space.

Honda adverts are always odd, like the Jazz ones where it is stuck in a jam behind a tractor etc, and the weird civic one where it shows someone going through their normal everyday routine before parking the Civic up and going to bed.
The Accord one where 'everything falls into place', is impressive, but like all Honda adverts doesn't tell you anything about the car.
The old Almera advert was nonsense, 'the car they don't want you to drive' had the desired effect, and of course, the Griff Rhys Jones Vauxhall ads were cr@p!

If you want to find the music to ads go to www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk very good site lists most ads and the songs they use. Had good forum very upto date on new ads

It's the clio (I think) where the girl is driving and boyfriend is asleep. She goes mad trying to wake him up, and when she looks at the good looking workman, he wakes up and says "Oi".
Now, does the fact that I saw this ad twice today, about 6 hours ago, and yet I don't know what car it was for...mean that they have spent too long on making the ad funny but not enough time on identifying the product?

it was the Punto...but I hate the Clio just as much.

My favourite car ad.
This one.
www.kontraband.com/show/show.asp?ID=966&NEXTID=0&P...s
It never made it onto TV but as any first time diesel owner will tell you, it's enough almost to give you nightmares.
Closely followed by any Honda ones, they have a certain truism to them.
As for ones I detest. I think the 'Smart' ads just try too hard.
|
VW's diesel ad - lovely. Wish they could transmit it.

Look out for the new Peugeot advert ( I think for the 206?), where the girl is asked "How much do you want one?". She ends up looking as though she has just kissed a Marmite sandwich. It's delightful!- (the advert that, is)

Even though the new one isn't really very nice at all, I think the Golf adverts are pretty good. The new one is but I like the one before it where the bloke is ringing up to view a Golf and he goes back in to the cafe and we've suddenly moved on 10 years.
Come to think of it, the Passat one is also very good - the one where the son passes the driving test and the Dad goes "Are you sure he's passed? He was pretty poor on hir 3 point turn".

Not an annoying advert, but permit me to mention it.
The Peugeot advert where the Indian guy sees a poster of a 206 and bashes his Hindustan Ambassador about until it resembles one.
Well, he didn't realise it at the time, but he'd actually created the prototype 307!
cheers, SS
|
And turns it from RHD to LHD! AMAZING!!

Except, in this day & age, the bloke with the sandwich would probably have her prosecuted for sexual assualt.
|
Vauxhall seem to be the masters of irritating ads, the latest Zafira-Meriva ones with the chubby kids acting as adults forces me to throw the remote in direction of the tv!
Also 'and away them corsa's go...' when will they ever learn?
|
Not sure, even after 3 weeks in France, if it's annoying or cute but every time my daughter (11)sees a Megane she sings the the ad line "I see you baby, shaking that ass...." . Does PG or anyone else know if this is record music or composed for the ad?
|
Does PG or anyone else know ifthis is record music or composed for the ad?
yes it's a record available to buy.. it's by 'groove armada' and it's called 'i see you baby'

Well, pop pickers, a few minutes' research reveals the version in the ad to be the Fatboy Slim Radio Edit of that song.. Not normally my sort of music.

The worst current ad is the one where an idiot in a wet suit chases after several car - Toyotas I think- shouting "That's my car" Puerile!
