Occasionally I save images from internet sites. In the past all I have done is right click and then click "save image as" and it saves image as a JPEG with its title. Today I tried to save one and it would only let me save it as a bitmap (huge) and as "untitled". Can't seem to be able to save as a JPEG. Any suggestions as to why?
|
Where's the web page? Which browser are you using? Could it be that the original was a bitmap so that's the format your browser wanted to use?
|
|
As you have saved the file.and you didnt mention OS with some the file can be converted to jpeg or jpg.if you have a graphics or photo application on your os try to use it to convert the file.there are other ways but dont know the os.would suggest a download of temp photo program like paint shop pro.
|
Irfanview (free) will convert from bitmap to jpeg if necessary but the original question is why the file is being saved as a bitmap in the first place. Knowing the URL of the file, or the page it's on, would provide the answer to that.
|
Welliesorter, Mech etc,
Sorry I didn't give many details - I don't save many photos but as an example I saved quite a few totem pole pictures(!)from a variety of Canadia/US websites for my wife's art lessons and also pictures of the car I bought, from a dealers website. My son works for a radio station and I have saved images from their website when he appears on it. However, I was selling my dad's old car recently and needed a picture of a 309 to e-mail to a cousin to show what it was like and had to save it first as a bitmap then convert it from bitmap to jpg in PSPro. The "properties" of the image showed it as a jpg on the e-bay site I got it from. Similarly, on my work computer I can right click on Honest John above or the C2 to the right and it says I can save the image as a jpeg or as bitmap. On my home computer it only says bitmap and the dropdown choice for image type doesn't offer jpeg.
Browser is IE6, Windows ME.
Sorry for long post about a minor inconvenience that I can easily work round!!
Phil
|
I meant can you post the URLs of some of the sites where it's happening, but from what you say it sounds as if the problem is universal. I don't have Windows ME so can't reproduce the exact problem. IE6 under Windows XP behaves like your work computer: it gives the choice of bitmap or jpeg.
I thought the solution might be good old Mozilla Firefox (www.mozilla.org/products/firefox ) but I've found that if I try to do the same in that, it saves the image of the C2 with a .php extension with no choice to change it. If I then open this with Irfanview I'm told it's an incorrectly named jpeg and I accept the program's kind offer to change it. The picture of the C2 is an exception though. Firefox saves most images perfectly so this may be a solution for you.
I'm still confused as to why IE6 under ME wouldn't have the option to save the file in its original format but here are a couple of possible work rounds.
- Right click on your image and select 'Properties' from the menu that pops up. This should give you a box that contains the address (URL) of the image. Copy the URL and paste it into your browser. This should give you the image alone and you should then be able to save it. I'm afraid I don't know whether this'll work in Windows ME. It works for me with the picture of the C2 under XP, as long as I rename it before saving. Otherwise, it tries to save it with the .php extension. This is presumably a quirk of this site which is generated by a database. I suspect most of those where you're finding your pictures are static HTML and won't suffer from this problem.
- In IE, go to File - Save as and select 'Web page, complete'. This will save the web page as an HTML file with the images in a separate folder. It's then a matter of selecting the ones you want and discarding the others.
One final suggestion: use Opera from www.opera.no . I've just tried it and saving images works perfectly. I'm surprised to find myself recommending it over Firefox. It's free if you can live with the adverts.
It is a trivial problem but it's the sort of thing that would bug me too.

WS and Lee,
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply. I think Lee's solution works i.e remove Shockwave (what is it?) and then reinstall when prompted next time on Internet.
One day I will find a problem you lot can't solve!!

Hi,
Just starting to get addicted to ebay and have placed my very first bid, trouble is I can not register with paypal in order to pay (if I am successful). Whenever I click on "sign up now" the page cannot be displayed.
I checked my internet connection and it is only 56 bit, is this the reason why I cannot access the page, does it have to be 128 bit connection for paypal?.
Many thanks in advance, I do hope I can sort this out in order to make a prompt payment as I would like to create a good history on ebay.
Regards Mal.
|
does it have to be 128 bit connection
I may be wrong but would think it a server prob.the 128 bit refers to encryption of data ie info given by you to them is broken up when you send.so no one else can see your details.it is decoded by paypal and kept secure on the server.as I said may be wrong?
|
|
Are you confusing the bits of your connection speed with the bits of the encryption of the secure web site?
You don't say which web browser you're using but I suspect it's just a matter of upgrading to the latest version to get the level of encryption needed.
|
Well, spotted Wellie. Mal, do you have the exact error message you're getting.
Phil, - if I knew the answer to the millionaire question, I'd be out of computers tomorrow! :-)

Hi Mal,
This could be down to using an old version of Internet Explorer, but I'm not certain. If you click Help and then About, it'll show you the version number. The current version is 6.something but anything 5.5something and above is OK.
You could try heading over to Microsoft and downloading the latest version from there. windowsupdate.microsoft.com is as good a place as any to stop.
Course if you're not using IE then this won't help.
You should be thankful though, eBay gets a bit addictive, I might have been better off not registering. Anyone want to buy my Garmin eTrex Vista or 20Gb iPod?!

Hi guys,
Well, I am using internet explorer 6.something or other, I am also using dial-up as we do not have broadband up here in the sticks until next year.
My connections lately are very slow in fact I sometimes feel like putting my foot through the screen at times while I am watching that blue strip slowly creeping across!!!.
I do have Mozilla installed so I will try that.
PS. it looks like I may be the last bidder as there is only 2 hours to go unless someone steps in and saves me the bother of having to register on paypal at this time as I am not increasing my bid, that much I have learned from live auctions.
Regards Mal.
|
What is the exact error message? It may still be that you need an upgrade to IE or it could be that there's a problem with the web site or even your ISP's web proxy. If it's just a browser problem, Mozilla should do the job fine. Apart from the obvious speed disadvantage, it shouldn't make any difference that you're using a dial-up connection. If you have this problem with PayPal I'm surprised you haven't had the same thing with other secure sites.
Is PayPal the only method of payment that the seller accepts? Most offer a choice of methods. On the rare occasions that I've used eBay I've usually paid by cheque (remember those?) or bank transfer. PayPal is very much slicker though.
When I signed up for PayPal, the only way they had of verifying your credit card was to charge one dollar to it. You then had to go to your card statement (which could take weeks if you weren't using internet banking) and use the reference number alongside the transaction on that to verify your identity on the web site. I wonder if they've streamlined the sign-up process since. If they haven't, you may end up having to use a different means of payment for this transaction.
|
You probably won't win the item if there are 2 hours to go and you aren't going to increase your bid.
I find that during the last 5 (or less) minutes of auctions, the bidding goes crazy.
You can set an upper limit for eBay to automatically bid you up to. It will only increase your bid by an appropriate increment, not necesarily to your maximum bid. It is a good way to bid without being present!
|
Sorted,
Managed to get a page up from paypal via mozilla apologising for me not being able to access their site and giving me step by step instructions. Tools menu-internet options-privacy-advanced-overide default settings, then adjust cookies.
Anway I fiddled about, not being sure what exactly I was doing and hey-presto I was registered in time to pay for the item which I had successfully bid for.
Thanks for replies, Mal.
PS. Now I realy am addicted!!!!

If you click on Help in Internet Explorer it will not only tell you which version you are running (IE6 is the latest) but also the level of encryption.
You require 128bit encryption although a patch/update to an earlier verison such as IE5 or 5.5 will achieve it.
However, IE6 is much better from a security point of view, a fact maintained with regularl updating from www.microsoft.com or WindowsUpdate.
If you wish to order items from websites (this is the majority) you will need to have 128bit encryption - it's as important for your protection as the retailer.
You will also need to go to IE's Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab and ensure that SSL 2.0 and 3.0 and TSL 1.0 are all enabled by ticking the check boxes.

The icon has dissappeared from the desktop. Done a search for 'recycle bin' but it doesn't seem to exist; yet i can still delete files! I'm running XP Pro.
Any ideas on how to get it back.
Thanx...
|
Are you sure the icon is not still there, but simply underneath another icon ? Its actually quite difficult [impossible?] to remove it accidentally.
If you do not have your settings configured to use the Recycle Bin, then items are simply deleted. Settings such as this or such as allowing disks/users to be configured separately are obtained by right clicking the Recycle Bin and slecting properties.
The sole advantage in using the Recycle Bin is that it gives you the oportunity to retreive a file deleted in error.
You won't actually find a file called recycle bin when you search for it, even if you have one.
I'd really suggest looking carefully at your desktop to see if its there but hidden. Try using windows explorer and look in your desktop, it will list all the icons/files. If its still not there ask it to show you hidden files as well just in case.
|
You can get rid of it by using xp power toys, assume power toys will put it back? Power toys is available on the MS site.
|
True. But as I said (or at least meant to say) its almost impossible to get rid of accidentally.
|
Almost tempted to ask if you've looked in the recycle bin for it......
|
|
True - you cant drag it onto itself, and it wont drag into a shortcut of itself either!
|

Thanx all for the help.
The recycle bin was the only icon I kept on the d/top, so it's nowhere to hide really.
I'll try the site mech1 suggests for help later.

Well chaps, I've tried the suggestions, but no luck yet.
Reg Edit can't help me either.
Looks quite good without any icons at all...
|
create an icon. shutdown and restart and see if you can still see the icon.
If you're logging in as a normal user, try logging in as an administrator and see if you can see the recycle bin.
|
|
Apologies if this is reatreading old ground, but have you tried the 'show desktop icons' setting?
You need to right-click the desktop, select 'arrange icons by' and then click 'show desktop icons'. If you still have things missing, right-click the desktop and choose 'properties', go to the 'desktop' tab and click 'customize desktop'. You'll see a section for 'desktop icons' where you can specify which ones you want to see.
|
Kuang: 'show desktop icons' did the trick.
Can't believe it was so simple - Cheers 4 that.
|
No probs - glad you have things back to normal! :)
That's one of those weird issues with XP that causes untold grief for so many people. I personally can't work out why anyone would want that sort of option for home use, but I assume it has something to do with creating customised desktops for specific uses where you'd only want your own things to show up - public terminals, for example.

Whenever I launch Internet Explorer, Google is normally set as my homepage. Now, it\'s been replaced by some other weird search engine which displays \'about:blank\' on the address bar and, despite me repeatedly resetting my homepage to Google, keeps coming back up when I relaunch explorer. There\'s also an irritating pop which warns about viruses, spyware etc. I don\'t click on any of it because it\'s clearly suspect.
I\'ve run a virus check and nothing\'s come up, but clearly something has found its way on to my machine. Any ideas what it is, where I can find it, how I can get rid of it.
Not big on tech knowledge, so if you can help keep it simple for an IT simpleton.

Have you tried Adaware or Spybot to see if something has invaded your computer (apart from a virus)?
Adaware is from Lavasoft
www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot
www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=do...d
|
|
As a matter of interest have you downloaded any programs.like shareware they often contain third party software.which have programs in them that will change your homepage.as previous post mentioned these as in spybot and the like will find and destroy.but may prevent other programs from working.if you use zone alarm will ask before these programs access internet.just a thought?
|
Trouble is, if it's using your browser to communicate Zonealarm (highly desirable though) won't catch it because you have already told it to let your browser connect.
Have a look in Start>Run>msconfig>startup to see if there's something dodgy there - if so, untick it and reboot.

|
|
Look for and install "hijackthis"
|
I've tried the Spybot route and it doesn't seem to have made a difference to the homepage (though it did flag up all kinds of muck I didn't know about).
Where do I look for hijackthis?
|
www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022-10227352.htm...1
try that.hope it helps
|
When you run hijackthis, you do need to be careful about what you delete. Essentially it spots everything in your registry which is either not as expected or not standard.
However, there are frequently good reasons why you may want it that way. e.g. if you have google toolbar installed hijackthis will flag it up.
The trick is to look down the list and read the line carefully. Looking for suspicious entries and using the help availble for each line should make sure you\'re safe. But if you\'re not sure, e-mail the log file to me and I can help.

Spybot has a page for configuring IE.
It will let you set the home page and then prevent anything else from changing it without your permission.
You need the "Advanced" view to access the menu item.

Have you checked that in IE's Connection tab (from Tools) your ISP is enabled as Always Dial My Default Connection (highlight the ISP first).
You need to then insert Google's home page URL as your home page on the General tab and enable it under Use Current.
Until you connect to your ISP you cannot link up with Google as the home page.
|
Until you connect to your ISP you cannot link up with Google as the home page.
There's nothing to stop you typing h t t p ://www.google.co.uk/ in the field for your home page. No need to be connected to do that.
It could be that returning to the dodgy homepage runs a dodgy bit of javascript or plants a tracking cookie every time you return to it so it's important that you change the start page before re-connecting.
|
Welliesorter
I've never suggested that you need to be connected to insert Google as the home page, as you will find if you read my posting again.
I was merely pointing out that to reach Google as the home page you first have to log on to your ISP - that's why it has to be the default for the Connections tab configuration.
No ISP connection, no Google home page...:-)
|
default homepage:
the problem may be nothing more than omitting to click on the "apply" button; after changing the homepage settings in
tools/internet-options/general/home-page
|
Quite correct - plus clicking OK as well afterwards...:-)
Often it's a case of not seeing the wood for the trees, such as Enabling "Hang Up When Finished" in the Send/Receive box in Outlook Express, which catches out quite a few trying to browse the Net.

I have recently upgraded my PC to run Windows XP professional. Since then I cannot log onto this site. Whenever I try to I get sent straight back to the login page. It is not a password problem because the red password incorrect text does not appear. I use both Opera and IE6 and the problem occurs on both. I have ZoneAlarm running as well but I had this on the Windows 98 setup before I upgraded. With 98 I could login using Opera and IE.
Oddly, I cannot login to Ebay on Opera but can using IE.
Any suggestions? Are there any funny little settings on XP I should tweak? Thanks
|
Usually the problem is cookies.
Do you have them blocked or restricted ? Easiest thing is to quickly lower your IE security down to nothing and then try. Don't leave it that way for any longer than you have to, but that will quickly tell you.
Alternatively set it to medium and reset everything to defaults.
|
|
I have ZoneAlarm running as well
>>
robin:
if your zonealarm has privacy cookie control, you have to set that also to accept both persistent and session cookies.
|
From IE's Tools>Internet Options>Privacy tab try allowing both First and Third Party cookies plus Session cookies, after clicking on the Advanced button and then enabling Override Automatic Cookie Handling.
If this works and you want to control cookies, return and either selection Block or Prompt for Third Party cookies; this allows a panel to come up on each website you visit and you can allow/refuse cookies as you require either temporarily or permanently.
If none of this works then download Proxomitron from:
www.proxomitron.info/files/index.shtml
If you do decide to do so then follow the configuration EXACTLY as detailed...:-)
I had the same problem about a year ago and my son, an IT support specialist, immediately suggested Proxomitron. I've had no problems since.

The Microsoft Works Word Processor software that was pre-installed on my computer when I bought it from PC World has thrown a wobbler and is no longer useable.
Would it be easiest to forget the original software and instal another word processor programme, say Microsoft Word? That way, I would have the installation disc should I have a problem in the future.
What would you do, bearing in mind that I am fairly computer-illiterate!

WordPad, which should already be installed on your system, is a perfectly straightforward and very efficient word processor.
The vast majority of people who have Word probably only use about two or three per cent of its power, features or facilities - WordPad covers that area and quite a bit more.
|
|
I'd download OpenOffice.org from www.openoffice.org It's a full office suite (word processor, spreadsheet, graphics etc. It's free and it's compatible with MS Office files. It also lets you save files as pdf documents. Can't lose I'd say.
|
Yes second open office, its 95% file compatible with MS office (the extra 5% is specialist function you probably will never use anyway)
Its a biggish download (68mb rings a bell?) slower to start than Office but once up and running wings along quite nicely
The save to PDF is a boon and of course ....... Its Free!
|
Thanks guys. I've found WordPad (skulking in Accessories ~ why didn't I think of looking for something in there?) ~ and it looks as if it will meet my needs. I'll also give OpenOffice a try. One way or another it looks as if I won't need to dip into my hard-earned pension.

Very unlikely to have much real value. eBay would be OK if you state the buyer pays p&p - it wouldn't cost much to list it and see what happens, but a better bet may be your local newsagents window or local free ads.

pps file is just a PowerPoint Show file, that is, a normal presentation file which will open up in full screen mode as soon as you double-click it. In this way, you don't have the possibility to modify it or to discover the tricks which lie behind.

I recently changed to Freenetname as my ISP because they are slightly cheaper, and several people recommended them.
My experience is less than good - often get engaged signal at peak times and frequently have to redial for 5-15mins to get connected at all other times.
They have offered to discuss this with me, but I can't see what's to discuss - this is where I make a laughable attempt to explain why:
If you've listened to your dialup modem, it goes 'di da da...hiss...di da da' and then you get connected. When mine fails to get to the authentication/connection stage, the first 'tune' plus hiss is followed by what I can only describe as a 'creaking door noise'.
Soon as I hear that, I know I'm not going to get connected on that try. Does someone know what that noise means? I have assumed it means all their ports are in use and the contention ratio is poor, so what's to talk about.
Have I got it wrong?
|
Frostbite, it usually indicates a faulty "modem" in their racks of virtual modems (or terminal servers or whatever the current term is for the boxes), or a faulty line leading to the modem. Since no-one gets connected to it, it remains regularly available for people to try connecting to ... and at peak times, when most of the other virtual modems are in use, the dodgy one comes to the top of the queue for lots of users/
The connection stats will show what's happening fairly easily, but some of these very low-margin ISPs aren't very hot on monitoring such things, let alone taking the necessary action to block out the faulty one or replace the access box.
|
I had a similar problem with onetel. It would often take ten or more attempts to connect, and for whatever reason the problem was at it's worst around eight in the evening - peak demand, perhaps.
I changed to tiscali and (Touch wood) it has so far been excellent, first time connect every time. A different ISP should solve your problem too, nothing more frustrating than trying to get on line and getting repeated failures.
|
Thanks both for your replies. I changed from Freeserve to Freenetname to save £2.49/month - very much a false economy so far!
NW, you have pretty well confirmed my suspicions with your answer. I cannot for the life of me see why they suggest I should discuss it with them, but I suppose I should appreciate the gesture.
I am fairly active on the auction sites, including on behalf of others, so a reliable connection is very important to me.
|
I cannot for the life of me see why they suggest I should discuss it with them, but I suppose I should appreciate the gesture.
NW has described it in one. It is a faulty port at the ISP and there is a very very good reason why you should discuss it with them - to aid them to find the problem and in turn resolve your problem. Frankly i find it very refreshing that a provider wants to talk with its customers to resolve issues.

Hello all,
Despite what it may sound like, I don't want to begin a new Kazaa empire downloading pirate music or anything like that but I just wanted a simple question answered.
Months ago (longer probably) there was that big fuss in America about 7 year olds getting sued for downloading music by the RIAA. There was a lot of fuss over here from the British equivalent the British Phonographic industry or somesuch. My question is, is it illegal yet over here to download music from p2p sites? Technically, whilst it was illegal in America, it wasn't over here but it's all gone quiet so I was curious.
Many thanks
Adam

I think you will find its illegal full stop.records films are copyright and states that the material in them is for personal use only.file sharing is illegal.problem has been regulating it.if you check out itunes it appears they have been surprised by the number of paid for downloads IIRC 80p a track.which is cheaper than buying single cd.
correct me someone if wrong?

Adam, I saw something on the BBC news site recently that in the US they are taking 400+ ip addresses to court, which will force the ISPs to reveal the identities of the users. There was some vague threat from the BPI(?) that they might start doing the same, but it doesnt seem to have come to much - have you tried iTunes yet, I think its ok although it annoys me that the French and Germans only pay 59p/track and good ol' rip(ped) off Britain gets charged 79p.

Thanks Pezza and Steve. I think that iTunes could catch on. We shall see.

PC is a Gateway PII/450 with 448mb memory running W98SE using ADSL Broadband via Linksys Router/Modem connecting via a PCI Network Card. Experiencing slow downloads particularly from sites like this with heavy ad content. Mouse jerky while downloading. Also clock is losing time when PC running (usually 24/7) but OK when shut down. Just noticed the cursor is flickering in sympathy with the Sky ad on the left!!
Diagnostic (SiSoft Sandra) suggests PCI latency is too high and offers some alternative values. How do I go about changing this?. Is it really likely to be the problem or is it just a symptom of old/dying PC?
N.B. Network card is only PCI device as sound is on the mobo and the modem for the old dial up connection is an ISA device.

The PCI latency is changed by going into the BIOS screen (usually avialble at power on time - Being a gateway tho it may have limited BIOS functionality and may not be changeable)
Sorry to say tho that changing PCI latency will offer you no noticeable improvement at all
Newer PC called for Im afraid

Oh and AOL adds a lot of cack and overhead that makes older PCs struggle
|
|
I doubt latency is changed in any respect.refers to time taken to retreive information from hard drive.there isnt as far as I know any way to alter it.if there is I would like to hear it.memory is or would be next prob.though what you have is or should be enough.can only suggest upgrading the pc.even a 56k modem is now slow.would be inclined to upgrade pc.I have just realised rf is correct.but still would upgrade pc.

I don't think you need a new PC Bromptonaut just try two things, another browser instead of IE & if still having problems a reinstall of windows will help a lot.
A P11/450 is an older machine it should still provide a reasonable performance, my K6 300Mhz laptop works almost as well for browsing as my 2500+ desktop.

Can any of the Computer gurus please tell me the best way to transfer data and programs from an old PC to a new PC. The old PC with Windows ME is still working.
|
Do the computers both have network cards? Many recent ones do. If so you can get a crossed-over network cable (there's a special name for this, but can't think of it, and Tandy, PC World etc. should be able to supply) which allows you to connect the two without needing a hub. Probably the easiest way, and pretty rapid too. If you haven't got these cards are only £10 each, or plug and play USB versions about $20 (these might be slower due to the limitations of the USB port though.
|
Two network cards with a cross over cable as described above.
Means you have to set up home networking on both with permissions.
or
A cross over serial cable and a programe like laplink (can be done with a cross over parallel cable too) can be expensive
or
Take the old disk out of the old pc, and put it in as a second disk
on the new machine (change the jumper on the old disk from master to slave)
or
Buy an external disk enclosure (usb connection) and fit the old disk in the enclosure
You may not be able to copy some programes over as they will need to be re-installed - ie they wont work if copied over.
I always go the disk install route., but take it out afterwards as it may slow the new disk (wont go into the technical details why)

All the above is spot on, as usual.
But if you have the time look at this site:
www.wown.com/
IME it gives minute detail on how to set up just about any Windows Networking you can think of.
|
There's always DOS + Kermit.
(just testing RF here)

The frog or the file transfer protocol?

Only a suggestion.install ME drive into new pc but before doing so install a program called Seatools.can be obtained from their webbsite.it works on all drives (but does warn it may not but I havent had a prob)set the bios on auto for disc1 and 2.ie C-D.
set the jumpers on back of drive to CS cable select.then install drives. It should after several seconds wait.detect OS on drive then boot.using seatools transfer data on disc to other drive.this will allow all programs to work.only thing is passwords will have to be re entered.I have used it for years not only on my own pc but others as well.As I said only a suggestion.
