I was talking to a lad the other day who's a bit obsessed with 'modifying' his car (in competition with his brother) The latest mod is to fit a spark plug inside the exhaust. Apparently (I didn't ask for a demonstration) when he floors it you get a 6 foot flame out the back! Has anyone else seen modifications like this on the roads? Anything more extreme?

The guy did say he put a switch in to disable it so as top avoid any unwanted attention form plod...:)

When I saw the title, I thought this thread was going to be about No Dosh gettin' jiggy with the delete button a bit too much ;)
I've known of cars that do shoot flame from the exhaust, but never heard of it being due to a spark plug in the exhuast.
One of the most ridiculous mods I've seen was a Fiat Punto with triple side exit exhausts on each side.
I'm sure it must have screwed up the running of the car, due to lack of back pressure, and it sounded like a Vespa being thrashed. Oh, and a Honda CRX with a flashing blue exhaust pipe. Do these people not realise they look like idiots?

The spark plug in the exhaust is quite an old trick. Couple of my mates did it with a Mk1 Escort, and a morris Marina back in the 70's. Nice to know today's boy racers aren't only into blue LEDs, but following on the trend from their ancestors ;o)

Plug in the exhaust goes back a very long way (probably pre-war!). My grandfather, along with his brothers, started in the motor trade shortly after the first world war. I remember him telling me that for a joke they would fit a plug in the exhaust and pull the choke right out to get a flame.

Another old trick (done when ignition HT voltages were lower than they are now) was to pull a vehicle close up to one of the closed workshop doors and run an HT wire to the door handle. Then shout one of the other mechanics over - who reaches to open the door and gets a shock from the handle.

I saw this once when I was a lad. The 'victim' got wise though, and took his flat cap off his head and wrapped it around his hand to use as an 'insulator' over the handle. Unfortunately the cap was damp and he still got a shock!

I'm a bit dissapointed with this. I thought my E320 CDI would look great with flames shooting out of the exhausts!

Grumpy, worried about you, how did you know about this web site? Just come across it by accident, honest??

...so will I be cool if I fit a flame-thrower to the back of car. Should work wonders for tailgaters on the A34.
extreme mods. - hillman
AdrianM's idea sounds great, I hate tailgaters, especially at high speed on the motorway.

Regarding spark plugs and shocks from same. My neighbour was apprenticed to a old chap with a wicked sense of humour. When he detected my neighbour's attention wandering he touched one finger to a spark plug and the other to my neighbours bare arm. Needless to say, he leapt to attention. That was years ago when HT voltages were not so high.

I witnessed myself a case where three lads were tuning an engine by adjusting the contact breaker position whilst observing the neon strobe and pulley notch. All were paying rapt attention when one lad's hair, long and greasy, fell across the spark plug. There was a loudish pop, and the lads hair caught fire. They all leapt back simultaneously and burst out laughing.

Shame you didn't film it. It could have been on 'You've been Flamed' :-)

i'm looking to do a modification to my car a la 007 ie. an oil spray out back of car at flick of switch in order to get rid of the turnips who constantly tailgate me whenever i go out.

any suggestions or links gratefully recieved.

If you have a car with a rear window washer, simply adjust the nozzle backwards, and give them a good squirt.
Brake fluid works wonders on their paintwork as well...

On reading the subject line, for a moment I thought this thread was going to be a pop at Alan, Dave, or Mark! ;-)

extreme mods. - OldPeculiar
Gosh no! I would never take a pop at the Right Honorable Moderators of this forum!

Why bother with an oil spray out the back? If you drive a diesel just leave the filler cap off.

So did I ! I came cruising in here ready for a serious delete session and left feeling rather silly.
