In a previous discussion (archived) there appeared to be confusion regarding which type of oil to use in these engines.
I have a 2003 SEAT Alhambra fitted with the VW 1.9 (130bhp) TDI engine. I recently enquired as to what oil I should use. The first (main) dealer told me to use any 10:40 Diesel oil - when I queried this they said it's what trhey used in the workshop. Not content with this, I tried a second dealer. They told me that they used Castrol 5:40 (I saw this in Halfords and it does not meet the VW 50501 Standard) adding that there was also one recommended by VW. The third dealer said that I had to use a specific VW oil which they supplied although they said I could use Quantum (VW's aftermarket brand - cheaper for German specialist parts retailers) as long as it was the one specified for PD engines. My local supplier sells this for £25 for 5 litres.
I'm concered as it would appear from my experience that 2 out of 3 dealers don't know what they are taking about. I also don't want to pay in the region of £50 - £70 for the same oil I can buy for £25 - or even worse the wrong oil. Can I supply the main dealer with the quantum oil and insist they use my oil - as it's VW it should not affect the warranty. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences?

from experience its down to the dealerships discression, they may be fine with it but you will probably have to sign somethign to accept liability for any future problem caused by incorrect oil being used, if your confident its the correct spec tho, i wouldnt worry about this

too true, archived and done to death since.
forum search proves it.

don't know about seat but note what audi say re. audiTDI ordinary multigrade oils :
Audi owners need not be inconvenienced by traditional fixed service intervals. There is no predetermined mileage for a service. Depending on how you drive, the interval will be up to 19,000 miles /24 months for petrol engines, up to 22,000 miles/24 months for the V6 TDI diesel and up to 30,000 miles/24 months for 3 and 4 cylinder TDI diesel engines.
Long Life oils such as Castrol SLX OW30 Long Life 2 must be used (please refer to owners handbook). They have been specially formulated for Audi and are a new generation of ultra high-grade synthetic oils designed to withstand ageing and high loads without deterioration. Using ordinary high quality multigrade oil will not cause any engine damage but it will defeat the object of the new technology and cause a service to be needed at 10,000 miles. In addition, compared with conventional oils, Long Life oils gives exceptional levels of engine protection, are kinder to the environment and deliver fuel savings. In recent tests carried out on vehicles in Germany SLX Long Life 2 resulted in a fuel saving of 2.72%.

SLX may be fine in the TDi, but I don't think you want to it in a PD engine. The back of the last can I looked at specifically points out it does not meet VW 505.01, which is the PD engine requirement.

So far as I can tell oil to VW 505.01 is mandatory on PD engines, and your warranty depends on its use. Doesn't the handbook make this clear? By the way, there are many suppliers of oil to VW 505.01 - including Millers. Some dealers know little about oil but you could check with VW UK, or look at Freds for more detailed material:forums.tdiclub.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=2

So I did. I thought it would only cause confusion, and there's enough of that about, on the basis that the original poster wanted to save on the initial outlay. Now he has the full story.

Thanks for the advice and more. I wasn't looking to save money - just avoid being ripped off. I didn't realise how well this had been previously covered - sorry for bringing it up again. Thanks to everyone.

Seems to be prety well confirmed here previously that Halfords is actually made by Comma, an Esso subsidiary. Last can I bought (in the recent offer) showed it met 505.00 but not 505.01. I'm intrigued by the inclusion of a 505.01 rated SLX on the above list, given the disclaimer that it specifically didn't meet 505.01 on the back of the can I looked at recently! Maybe there are different versions about in different markets.

john s:
longlife slx2 meets 506 spec which apparently superior to 505.1
if halfords=comma, comma=esso, mobil=esso,
then halfords=mobil ? ? ?

It's very simple really! 506.01 is the oil for extended service intervals. 505.01 for normal service intervals - i.e. 10,000 miles OR 1 year, which ever comes first.
506.01 such as SLX Longlife II can of course be used in pdi engines that do not have extended service intervals, but that would be overkill.
As nearly everyone else has said 'under no circumstances should oil which DOES NOT have the specification 505.01 or 506.01 be used in VAG group pdi engines'
I don't know about other people but I'm starting to hate VAG for using this so and so oil!

Italiastar - please visit www.fordgalaxy.org.uk and search for this topic.
The Galaxy, Alhambra and Sharan are all basically the same vehicle and all use the VW diesel engine.
Castrol SLX II was developed specially for this engine and is for extended drain intervals - I have spoken to Castrol\'s technical service dept. If you do not go for extended service intervals but 10,000 miles or one year max, then you can use the 505.01 spec oil, but DO NOT use the SLX II in older PD TDI engines that have not been designed to take it.

Further to earlier comments on this subject. We run a Golf TDI 130 PD, plus two 110 HP (non PD) engines in an earlier Golf and a SEAT Leon. We also have a Peugeot 306D, a Xsara HDi, and an elderly Transit. Prior to purchasing the PD, we used Castrol Tection (fleet oil - about £30 for 25 litres from Castrol distributors) throughout.
When we bought the HDi Xsara, we consulted Castrol to see if the Tection was OK. We also gave them a list of all our other vehicles. They confirmed Tection was OK for the Citroen HDi, but asked which TDI's we had (at that time these did not include a PD). They advised Tection would not be suitable for any PD, and that it would require 505.01 (or SLXII for extended service intervals). When we subsequently bought the 130 PD (from a Castrol employee as it turned out, so the subject of oil came up during negotiations for the purchase!), we attempted to buy 505.01 from our usual Castrol supplier. He quoted about £7 per litre, but said he could not obtain it until he had another large order to palce with Castrol. We eventually bought a 20 litre container from a VW dealer. After heavy discounting, we paid around £100 for the 20 litres.
|
Millers and Valvoline both do a 505.01 oil for about £20/5 litres. I believe that Valvoline also do a 506.01 oil but I don't know the price.
