Re Master Mechanic products? - Petel
Hello.
I am seeking a spare part for a trolley jack, Master Mechanic TJ4000. These were made in China for " Master Mechanic " based in Ipswich. Can anyone please advise who these people are and if they are still in existance. If not, any suggestions as to where parts could be obtained would be welcome.

Seeking a new pressure seal, item 77 on the parts list or a complete piston assy, parts 73 to 77 on their parts list.
Thank you.
Re Master Mechanic products? - mrmender
if it's just seals you require any good hydraulic specialist should have what you want, they are all standard sizes look in Yellow pages
Re Master Mechanic products? - Petel
Thanks for the suggestion but only two such places in my area, went to both today with zero result. Having searched on the net, have only found one lead, manufacturer unknown but has a part number SU11-5-6.5. This translates to 11m/m dia at the top, flairing out to just over 12m/m when pumping. Has 5m/m hole down through, presumably for a 4.5m/m shaft and stands 6.5m/m overall hight. If this ( SU11-5-6.5 ) means anything to anyone, would be pleased to hear of it. Any further suggestions as to places which might stock or supply such seals would be appreciated.
Thank you.

My Master Mecanic trolley jack is still working OK after more than 12 years (X fingers). But it was so cheap when new - and similar kit is even cheaper now - that I can't see the point of trying to repair it when it goes wrong. Am I missing something?
Re Master Mechanic products? - Petel
Hello Mr Hannon.
Pleased so hear that your unit is giving good service, so was mine until let down by a small piece of plastic. I know that these seals are out there somewhere.

no help to you , but I bought an Epco 30 years ago and it is still perfect, but was equivalent to a month's wages then.

I hate buying rubbish and will not do it
Re Master Mechanic products? - branchpipe
In reply to Mike's comment "I can't see the point of trying to repair it" well I thought we were living in the time of recycling, and to throw the whole jack away for the sake of a small piece of nylon/plastic does not seem to make environmental sense.

However, it does seem I shall be off to Argos to purchase a new jack, as I cannot live with out one. They have a 3 toner for £39.99 (038/1767) in their new catalogue, and if eventually I track down a seal for my TJ400 I shall then have two jacks, one for either side!!!
Re Master Mechanic products? - syncro6
My MASTER MECHANIC trolley jack model TJ1500, bought 13 years ago failed while I was lifting my Passat - okay I agree that it was cheap and it was always meant as a back-up while using my Sealey semi-pro trolley jack, but the 10 year old Sealey will not hold up for long periods - I bought a refurbish kit from their local agent (£5.00 +p&p) but have not fitted this kit yet. Back to the MR MECHANIC jack, as with others it is the cup seal that has split and it seems a pity to trash this jack because of that. If I am correct, excluding the really professional models, there are no "good jacks" or "bad jacks" its just the paintwork that makes them up market or down market - oh and the packaging - as they, or at least the hydraulic parts, are all made in China! So, the smart money might be on matching your jack to a Sealey jack and getting their local agent to supply you with a kit. It seems wrong to dump this work on Sealey, but if it gives you a working jack, why not. I can see that I will be forced to buy a small Clarke jack from Machine Mart and check if the pump cup seal is the same - if it is I'll just check for the equivalent Sealey model type and order a parts kit - okay I will end up with another small cheap trolley jack - but I'll find a space for it! Curiously, while searching for the MASTER MACHANIC jack "handbook", I found the handbook for my 30 year old Halford trolley jack and its spares kit! It was ignored when I got my Sealey semi-pro jack, but now with a drop of fluid its currently my "number 1" jack.

Re Master Mechanic products? - erik
Hi Petel.
I too have a TJ4000 that was in need of a new Cup Seal. Having read this discussion forum and the obvious difficulty in obtaining the correct spare part I decided to make one. Fortunately I have a lathe and the material I chose was white nylon. Using a relatively high cutting speed and an ordinary high speed tool it machined very well. I have used the jack a number of times and it operates very well with absolutely no leakage. I feel the the nylon seal is far superior than the original one and definitely stronger. Also I am very confident the seal will not suddenly fail but may leak slightly with prolonged use, only time will tell.
Regards.
Erik.
Re Master Mechanic products? - sjl
Hello Petel,

I too have a faulty cup seal, material seems far too friable. Even the spare part - not used has disintegrated in the bag. Im going to take Eriks advice and make one at work (the boss is away next week) may try PTFE as I am wondering how the oil will react with the nylon. Does seem a shame to bin it for one small part.

Re Master Mechanic products? - erik
SJL.
PTFE will work fine and in fact is very similar to the white nylon I used. It is not affect by the oil. I could have used PTFE but decided to used nylon because it has to distort slightly to fit onto the piston. The slightly difficult bit is machining the end flare which has to be correct to maintain a good sealing surface. Best of luck and I will not tell the boss.
Regards.
Erik.

Hi Erik,
I also have one of these jacks. The cup washer has been split for years and it only lifts about half way. I don't want to replace it because a) it has a very low retracted hight, so fits under my old low-slung sports cars b) it is obscene to throw away a whole jack for the want of a washer. If you are making some of these seals I would be very grateful if you could make me one too - I'm happy to pay a reasonable price for your good work too. Please let me know and I'll find a way to make contact. Thanks JJC

Hi, last week I joined that happy band of brothers who have a very good, hardly used master mechanic jack that doesnt work for the sake of a cup seal that is almost impossable to source! Is there any chance you can help me out? I dont want to take advantage of you but if you have a spare seal I would be happy to pay a reasonable sum for the seal, scrapping the jack seems such a waste.
Re Master Mechanic products? - Rupert46
Hello out there. I have just discovered this web site and that I am joining what seems to be a growing clan. My master mechanic jack seel failed this week - on investigating my jack i ended up with a seal in several pieces of inflexible material!
To get to the point - if any of your correspondents has now found a source for the seal or has ended up making extra I would be most interested in purchasing one for a reasonable sum.
Thanks for reading my SOS.

I have a brand new TJ4000 going on Ebay today. If you have not resolved this by now you may want to bid for it. It is absolutely new and still in its box, just been sitting in the shed since we bought it.

Re Master Mechanic products? - Dave Elsy
What is the current position on seals for these jacks? Is anybody producing them in quantity, as there's obviously quite a demand.
This same model of jack appears to have (or even still is) marketed under many different names, but all imported from China, and all without any spares.

I've now got three duff jacks, all of which need new seals. I've spent hours and hours searching for spares with absolutely no luck whatsoever.
It's a crime to throw them away just for the sake of a small platic part.

Please email me if you have or can make some at david.elsy@blueyonder.co.uk and my cheque will be in tonight's post!

Thanks

I nearly had an accident when i discovered the original conversation, as this piston seal and o ring are what i have been looking for for years. I to am the proud owner of the M M TJ4000 which has been loosing pressure for a long time now and finally give up the ghost when I took it apart today, I`ve even given up servicing my car on the strength of it. Thanks to Pete for starting the ball rolling but was disappointed to discover that what started on 10th June 2007 untill now Aug 2008, is still not resolved. I don't want to burden anyone, "we all know time is precious" but if anyone can obtain these allusive parts for me I would be eternally grateful. You may forward my email to anyone who might help. TJ4000 jack.
Many answers further down this discussion I found the answer to a broken seal in the pump. HTS Ltd of Manchester (0161 834 7666) can supply a replacement seal and O ring for £9.09. I rang them yesterday, and the parts arrived today. Ref MUP 6x12x6
The jack would not pump up until I had turned it upside down, and operated the handle a few times.
Thanks to whoever found the company.
Re Master Mechanic products? - jjc
Thanks so much donald35,
After only half working for most of the last 20 years I can now get it up again! I'm really glad, I've always liked this jack, it goes low, has a wide wheel-base and a tall lift.
I got the same parts from HTS in Manchester. The phone number on their web site is different to above - but it is the same place and the parts are correct for my TJ4000.
Cost was just over £10 including VAT and P&P for the cup washer and o-ring. They seemed to know what I was talking about when I phoned up so I guess they might be doing a brisk trade in these parts now.

Hope this gets another jack back in action!>>

I have just found this discussion after my jack failed a couple of weeks ago, I ordered the parts from HTS yesterday and they arrived first thing this morning, great service. However after first removeng the pump cylinder to remove what was left of the old seal then refitting and fitting the new seals and piston the jack still does not work.It has the same problem as when it failed the handle when operated under load is pushed up as if trying to eject the pump piston, the only thing missing is the spray of hydraulic oil, so at least the new seal works.Have I missed something, the old seal skirt from the cylinder matches with what was left on the piston so I don't think there's anything left in and I drained the jack and refilled with new oil, anyone got any thoughts, I haven't got the parts diagram so I'm not sure what else is in there.

trolley jacks seal kits - Monitorman3

Hi All,

I realise that this an old thread but here is my experience in fixing one of these tj4000 jacks.

My neighbour asked me to look at, and perhaps repair a tj4000 which his son had used to jack out some tree roots, when he got the jack back it no longer pumped up.

There was no sign of leakage but when pumped the lifting pad rose and stayed there if the handle was held down, however when the handle was raised for another pump the lifting pad dropped back again. In addition if the lifting pad was held up by hand, and the jack pumped again it would lift again, but drop down to the previous position. He suggested that it was caused by failure of the seals.

I removed the pump piston and cylinder by undoing the hex nut (and that was tight !!) to find that the nylon type seal had disintegrated into a crumbly mess. I cleaned this out ( not good enough it turns out), and ordered a polyurathane U-CUP seal size 6mm IDX 12 mm OD X 6mm high, from Totally Seals on Ebay. Now this seal is really too short, it should be 8mm high, but I packed it with a 12mm OD X 2mm thick O-Ring.

On reassembly the jack still did not work and showed exactly the same symptoms.

Now these jacks have several steel balls which act as valves, no springs, just plain old ball bearings. There is one ball (5mm diameter) inside the pump, below the piston which stops the oil going back into the oil reservoir, but this was clean and in place.

In addition there is another ( probably 5mm diameter) ball in the passage which feeds the oil from the pump to the Ram cylinder which I reasoned could be jammed by a bit of broken seal material. The only way to get to this is to dismantle the jack and undo the big (50mm AF) nut on the Ram end of the cylinder. This turned out to be super tight, requiring a 3 foot long bar to get it undone. OK, undo the nut, remove the Ram look down the Ram cylinder and you should see the ball tucked partly behind the copper sealing washer. In my case the ball did not move but after tapping it down with a punch and washing through with paraffin and compressed air the ball could be lifted and dropped with a magnetic screwdriver. Everything was washed with paraffin and dried with compressed air and reassembled using proper jack oil as an assembly lubricant.

Lo and behold, after refilling and bleeding, it all works perfectly.

Was it worth it ?

Well, in financial terms no, definitely no. But is was fun, interesting and I learned something.

trolley jacks seal kits - Don Anderson

TJ4000 pump seal 6mm or 8mm?

The pump seal in my TJ4000 trolley jack failed and I noted that the HTS Seal Kit comprises an O-ring and a U-CUP seal size 6mm IDX 12 mm OD X 6mm high.

However, as with Monitorman3 - and the pistonheads forum at

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1169545

the seal fitting on my TJ4000 pump piston is 8mm deep (high) so I contacted HTS (Hydraulic Transmission Services Ltd - 0161 834 7666) and spoke to Barry Worswick who advised me not to pack their 6mm high seal with a 2mm O-ring, but to use an 8mm high seal, which they now hold in stock.

HTS sent me a kit with the 8mm seal - and it fits!
