Hi can anyone help? I have a 7 seater jeep that needs servicing but is still a good runner. My problem is that I can't afford to maintain it. Ideally I would like to get a car that's 1.5 .

I am a single parent that's struggling on a low income so I can't afford to buy a car . Now what options are available to me?

Some one mentioned part exchange as an option???

I am in the Surrey area. I have to have use of a car as that's the only stressfree way I can drop my kids to school. I have no one to turn to for help. I hope someone out there can advise me on the best cause of action. I have tried to freecycle swap but to no avail. How much would I be looking at buying a car that will take me from A to B thats if I can sell the jeep.

What is the best car to buy for someone in my position? I will be really grateful for any help or advise that can be given .

Hi...welcome :)

I'm by no means an expert but there are some more knowledgable than me who I hope will be able to offer you some advice.

Some questions for you...

What type of Jeep do you have, and what year is it?
When you say you want a car that's 1.5 do you mean the engine size?
How many children have you got - do you need seven seats?

Part exchange is where you put down your car as payment towards a different car. Unless you were getting a new car that was worth less than your Jeep, you would have to add some money to it, or take out finance/loan on the outstanding amount, which it doesn't sound like you are able to do at the moment.

Hi PoloGirl and thanks for your reply .
Here is answers to your questions
The Jeep I have is an import pajero 2.5TD 1994
When I said 1.5 I was referring to the engine , as I am told anything bigger is not very economical .
I dont need seven seats. I only need 5 for myself and children.
Based on what you have said I have since decided against part exchange and am now looking for a economical and reliable car ( see above post)
I am not in a position to use finance company.

My two mates get their cars this way. They both pay no more than £400 for 12 months of motoring.

They keep them for the period of the MOT and then just scrap or sell them on for parts:

Go to your local main dealers (Vauxhall, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Peugeot etc) and ask to speak with the sales manager.

Tell him what you have, what you may be able to afford and what you are looking for.

Ask him if he would consider selling or consider doing a straight swap of your vehicle against a low value part exchange that they have taken in that has 12 months MOT to you.

I say low value as in: someone will come in with a vehicle that the dealership will take as part exchange and will either put it straight to scrapyard or to auction because it is not new or smart enough to go onto their own forecourts.

They don't want the hassle of arranging & paying for transport to auction or the scrap yard do they? No because this takes their profit up!

You must go to the main dealers though to get these cars as the smaller dealers will see them as a resellable item.

Some of these cars, even though old will have a years MOT on them and 6 months road tax to get the part exchange value up and nothing more against them than age.

Most sell for under £300 at auction and most dealerships offer peanuts as part exchange value for them. So they want peanuts back.

Making an offer of as low as £200 to £400 to the dealership may get you a bargain!

It does my two mates.

Hope this helps.

Hi k, you have a 94 or so Mitsubishi pajero 2.5, presumably thats diesel, and one of the most reliable older vehicles you could own.

Now you say its in need of some work, is this just servicing or is something wrong thats going to be expensive to fix?

If twer me i would be searching via some mitsi (or maybe other 4x4 specialists) forums for a recommended independent specialists to give you a more reasonable quote for servicing this fine vehicle.

Please go by sensible sounding recommendations, and not by the indy with the most impressive website. My mercedes indy doesn't for example have internet but is one of the oldest established and knowledgable of his type, please i cannot stress how important this is.

I say this as i reckon your car is worth roughly 1500 to 2000 if in reasonable condition, and though you can find quite reasonable vehicles for this sort of money, they will still need maintenance, and unless diesel will probably be no cheaper to run, and probably nowhere near as reliable as your pajero.

If the vehicle has very expensive repairs looming then obviously your are looking at replacement, what i would suggest is get some advice from people here and on specialists (to your particular model) forums before parting with much needed cash.

Don't just dispose of it at the end of a year's MoT;put it in for another one-if it passes or needs only a few pounds work, you've got it for another year.

Thanks to you all for your advice . I am having trouble with my steeling wheel noise although I have been told that its fixable something to do with the plastic rubbing against plastic*sigh* ??? . I cant afford to maintain it the jeep anymore . As I am on very low income . However, I do need a car as I have to drive on 4miles via motorway everyday to drop my children to school . I was thinking that if I could get a reasonably priced car until I get on my feet I will be better off that way . So far I have been advised that fords and volvos are the best cars . Please enlighten me if thats wrong.

Where abouts in Surrey are you?

I dont claim to be a mechanical genius but I do all the work on my own cars from servicing to engine changes.

I am happy to help someone who makes an effort to help themselves.

Just a thought.
The problem with your car might be an easy fix then you can sell it for better money and get something better suited to your needs.

'Frying pans and fire' spring to mind.
You sell one load of problems, and buy a load more.
If you are unable to self fix, I think you need the newest car / lowest miles possible for your money. I reckon a Skoda Felicia for around £800 (last ones made W/X) would be fine, if owned by a BOF who had it maintained, most do. It's just finding one as they are very good value and well made- if not full of toys you do not need.
Your Pajero should sell easily to some sucker who thinks 4x4 are the bees knees.

Thanks to you both you have made very good points . Stuart I am in Chessington , at the moment its costing me around £35 a week for diesel. Whilst I would love to keep the jeep , I simply cant afford it , based on just the diesel not to mention the service I would have to give it .
I was generally looking into Volvos and fords I was told they are supposed to be good.

EDIT: I've put a link to your message in the main technical section at the Pajero Owners Club - I'm sure someone will be able to help. Hope this is okay!

Go to www.pocuk.com/forums/index.php and post a question on there looking for help - there must be someone near you to help....

Hope this link is okay with the Mods - I find it a great site as a recent buyer of a Shogun (erm, update on that to follow in a couple of weeks hopefully :-(]

thats got to be the worst chat up line this year !

It would be a good line if you were a cartoonist - I can visualise chickens pulling double yokes....

Agree - if they were merely yolks it would be a poor chat-up line, even worse than 'Hello yolks'
