Driving in France - adjusting headlights - nyg
Unlike the old model, there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the headlights on my BMW 5 series (e60) for driving on the rhs. I seem to recall reading soemwhere that it's legal to drive in Europe with std lights provided they are at lowest setting on the dash mnounted control. Anyone else heard of this or am I dreaming? Thx.

Dont think thats right nyg. This site says unless you have a car which adjusts to Continental roads you have to use a deflector.

Has anyone ever seen a French car using deflectors in the UK?

Yes - once only though.

I just point them down and I've had no grief in 8 trips.

Didnt bother this time. Just wound the lights down to the lowest level using the load compensator thingy.

Discussion along these lines a few weeks ago said that masking could/should not be used on Zenon lights because of the temperatures involved.

A lot of headlights these days are polycarbonate, many of the Renault ones are. You need to get special convertors otherwise a hot spot could develop on the plastic and dis-colour it.

In theory it is an offence to drive in France with unconverted headlights, even in daylight. But then so it is with a blown bulb.
