Updating a passport neednt take very long any more. The new system of taking everything to a main Post Office where all of the documents are checked and you pay any fees seems to work very well.
I needed to renew my passport before a trip to Oz, took everything in on the monday lunchtime...paid my money, supporting docs were returned there and then (so no sending away of irreplaceable docs). I took away my receipt which gave me a phone number to trace progress of my application and a stated aim of returning my passport within 10 days.
My old passport was returned on the wednesday morning and my new passport was in the post on the thursday morning.
Very impressed after the chaos of the past when passports could take many weeks to arrive.

Is anyone familiar with it? I didn't notice any advertising, so who benefits, who is behind it etc? More importantly is it really the good clean fun it appears to be.

Merchandise, a magazine, competitions involving Sony products, downloads with possible spyware/adware, loyalty tie-ins through email, home page, plus they ask you to sign up and you can bet those details are worth something. You can't access the 'about us' page unless you sign up. Looks terrible to me. What's in it for you that's worth the potential hassle and computer havoc?

My two children use this site as well.
To actually exchange e mails etc they need adult authorisation.
We facilitated this and they do chat with a handful of regular children from the states, as well as some of their school friends just up the road.
However, we have hilighted the dangers etc of internet groomers and the like, after a handful of high profile cases have hit the headlines, even to the extent where our eldest designed a warning poster based on "You don't know who you are talking to"
In addition, we limit their time on the PC.
I cannot see any threat coming from the site itself, I think the only dangers are from unscrupulous users.
Let them pursue it and just keep watch over their shoulders from time to time.

Can anyone explain the logic behind ITV's programme scheduling? Today, Sunday, Rugby World Cup games are using both ITV 1 and 2.
The Wales game is on ITV 1, while the England game is on ITV 2 - WHY? Surely the advertising revenues from ITV 1 must be much greater? You cannot access ITV 2 unless you have digital or a set top box at a cost of £80-100 (cheaper on Ebay)
Has the handle "Grumpy Old Git" been taken? Because if it hasn't I think I must qualify!
I only ask because I want to know.

Star (Bless old Rupert for once) has been superb on the Rugby. Every match has been shown live followed by 2 replays, thanks to my old masters DHL for the sponsorship, so no need to set the VCR if it doesn't fit your schedule. Just dial up Domino's and send the maid out for more of the amber nectar. Rugby has a huge following in SEA with all the expats. Pity it only comes every four years and they fill the interval with tedious tennis cricket and that frightful pansies' game soccer.... :+D

Lucky you G! We have had virtually no midweek games on "ordinary" TV and highlights are at some unearthly hour, unless that is you stay up for highlights only to find that they were on at 4 pm (yeterday) or 2.45pm (today). Thank goodness Wales - NZ was on live this am , fantastic game, didn't know who I wanted to lose most!! Ended up cheering for Wales! But obviously a much better game than England's which was a walkover.
Feel sorry for the minnows who try so hard yet can't compete with the big guns who should really "adopt" some of the smaller nations and help them with coaching, finance, and some matches where smaller nations play big clubs/provinces to help their players develop. And finance their players so they can play in the world cup rather than being tied to clubs in UK, France, NZ etc for financial reasons.
Football on the other hand always seems to be on live with a two hour build up and a two hour "discussion" afterwards no matter how unimportant the game. At least the quarters are on ITV 1 next weekend (I think!!)

Yep, Aus- Ireland an excellent game also. Tell Growlette she is absolutely right - it was a forward pass. Don't think it made much difference to final result - NZ always had that much more class than the Welsh but it was a fantastic effort by the Welsh (and Irish) who played their hearts out until at the end exhaustion took its toll. But what incredible sport it is. Would poofballers EVER show such commitment and courage and put their bodies on the line like the rugby players? (well, it says you have you have to have a question)!!!.Glad I last played 20 years ago when fly-halfs were not expected to tackle 10 stone backs let alone 18 stone forards (and backs!)

Just like to remind all Backroomers of a few important home safety tips:
1) Don't leave food cooking under the grillin the microwave unattended.
2) When the power in your home goes off, investigate why quickly.
3) Make sure that those fancy mains powered smoke alarms that the builders included in the house actually are cpabable of having a battery back up!
It appears that the food in the microwave caught fire, the flames then got sucked into the unit itself via the fan which then promptly caught fire along with the other innards of the machine and tripped the electricity. Unfortunately at this point the fire and smoke was mainly contained within the micorwave which meant by the time it was smokey enough to activate the alarms, the power was already dead and the alarms useless.
Fortunately we caught the fire in time to chuck the whole thing out the front door, but it could have been much worse than just a bit of smoke damage. As it was, a couple of hours cleaning and the kitchen was fine, but the foot high flames kinda scared my mam who discovered it only when she opened the microwave door!
I of course was hard at work, so only found out about this little drama this morning, but I'd urge any Backroomers with these mains powered smoke detectors to check they have battery backups. Ours appear to be the Extra Value Cheapo range as installed by the housebuilders with no backup. As we don't smoke the chances are that any housefire will be electrical and so the alarms will more than likely be useless.
Buy some decent ones now!

Copy that, we had a devastating electrical house fire nearly 3 years ago. As part of re-equipping the rebuild, all new smoke detectors were installed (USA First Alert brand) and these are checked monthly by me. They are not mains powered but battery powered and give a warning when the battery is low. Also we have extinguishers in strategic places. Stable door etc but a painful lesson.
Also (we need a question but this is a valid one) does each member of your family know what the drill is in the event of fire? You may find as we did that your local Fire Brigade can provide pointers and a checklist from which you can develop a fire drill to fit your particular home.

This has come up a few times on the pilots own site www.pprune.org.uk. Go to the forums and search Tech Log, Safety or Questions. IIRC they don't seem over sure themselves. Either(a) so that if all the lights go off or you have to run away from the wreckage your eyes are accustomed to the darkness or (b) to reduce the load on the engines from generators etc thus increasing the power available form that/those remainig in the event of one quitting at a critical moment.

Read Complicity by Ian Banks a few yrs ago and enjoyed that.

Most of Iain Banks books are as shocking and an excellent read, but if you like SF, then Iain M. Banks (same author but writes his SF under the slightly different name) also has the shock factor and very off beat. Especially when you realise that half the book (alternate chapters) are telling the same story backwards from an alternate point of view!
Recommend Consider Phlebas, Use of Weapons, Player of Games plus many others

Christopher Brookmyre has a fantastic back catalogue of seven or eight books - some of my favourites are "A big boy did it and ran away" and "Not the end of the world", as well as what turned into a trilogy(?) that started with "Quite ugly one morning", with an investigative journalist as a main character.
I'll second the praise for almost all Iain Banks' books, both the SF and non-SF. Didn't particularly enjoy "The Business" or "Canal Dreams". "The Bridge" was superb, as was his first book "The Wasp Factory". One of his most famous is probably "The Crow Road".
Colin Bateman specialises in anti-heroes with lots of sharp one-liners, although his earlier stuff is better - try "Divorcing Jack" and "Cycle of Violence".Try Ian McEwan for something darker - too many to list here, but "The Cement Garden" and "Enduring Love" stand out for me.
Also try "Ripley Bogle" by Robert McLiam Wilson.

I don't know whether this would fit your bill, but I was bought a copy of "Running With Scissors" by Augusten Burroughs (ISBN 1-84354-150-5) recently and it is absolutely enthralling.
It's an auto-biographical book about an American boy who is given up for adoption and is adopted by his psychiatrist. It is certainly off-beat and definitely shocking but a danmed good read.

I believe this is the reason as not all airlines dim the cabin light during a night time takeoff.
I do not take my shoes off in the cabin until we are up up and away. I want to be able to leave in a hurry if a unplanned return to the airport requires it.
I am a relaxed frequent flyer on arlines like BA but not so on some other carriers I have been forced to use.

I've just received a leaflet through my letterbox extolling the virtues of using "SepClean" biological booster in septic tanks ~ and my bungalow has a septic tank. Is there any real need to use such a product, and are there any significant advantages of doing so? I am almost totally ignorant on the subject of septic tanks, as I have never had one before.

Back in the good old days, a (look away now if you are of a squeamish nature) dead animal, ranging from a couple of manky chickens to half a goat would be added to a septic tank to boost the bacteria present, so breaking down the other \"stuff\" in the tank a little faster. I\'ve seen references to yeast, yoghurt, stale milk and rotting veg doing the same job.
I presume this product operates on a similar principle.
A quick search on google for septic tank bacteria should a) put you off your lunch and b) baffle you as to whether you need a product like this.
Probably cheaper to get a couple of value chickens or some brewers yeast and away you go.
The key seems to be avoiding using bleaches and other household products that will stop or slow the biological action. If all your waste water goes into the septic tank, then the biological breakdown of solids will be slowed down so a \"starter\" like the ones mentioned above will help. If you have a different system for \"grey\" water (unlikely in the UK) then you probably don\'t need to do anything.

Dimming cabin lights topic
Simon, the reason there is a variance on PPRUNE is that it is inhabited by pilots and non pilots, so take things you read on there with a pinch of salt. Many of the pilots may hold a PPL (private pilots licence) but as they don't have cabin lights to dim, then they may post duff information based on their own personal opinion.
As a 747 pilot, the definitive answer is to aid your night vision in the event of an evacuation at night (we don't switch off cabin lights for day take offs, so it's clearly not a generator issue!)
It takes a few minutes for your eyes to become acclimatised to the dark due to the function of rods and cones in your eyes (rods are used for low light and peripheral vision, cones for central high definition vision).
By dimming the lights, your rods will have time to warm up so that in the unlikely event you are plunged into darkness as a broken aeroplane screeches to a halt, you have at least half a chance of finding your way to the exits.
It never fails to surprise me how even the most educated people switch their brains off when they get onboard a plane. Much is made of the safety brief etc because it's law, but many folk just assume they have handed responsibility for their own lives over to the crew when they sit down.
Please, when you fly, put your newspaper down, take your walkman off and listen to the brief. Count the number of headrests between you and the exit row/door both in front and behind you. Make a quick note how that door opens too. They are foolproof (don't hang onto the handle on a 747 though, the power assist release will pull you outside!
Imagine you are the sole survivor of such an event and you are temporarily blinded. Planning your escape route will go a long way to making sure you aren't a statistic when they clean up the mess.
We do switch off a couple of air conditioning packs for take off as they do present a drain on the engine output (not critical, but for safety, we need all we can get). The 747 is certified to take off at maximum weight with an engine failed during take off, but with a clearance height of just 35 feet. Planes usually go over the perimeter track at 1,000+ feet. Imagine a 747 clearing your head by just 30 feet. Only in the event of an engine failure at very high weights does performance become an issue (think Heathrow to Singapore with full pax, cargo and fuel).
If things weren't on our side and we slid through that perimeter fence onto the road in the middle of a wet night, it would help if your night vision was warmed up ready to go!

You have added to my knowledge here with the counting the headrests tip - I wonder why that isn't included in the brief? It'll be different every time which might make more people listen to it - as it is they are always the same on every plane - result is switch off.

OUr pilot friend makes a good point. One that is expandable to nearly everywhere we go.
If you are in any enclosed place, ALWAYS work out your escape route. This applies to work places, public places (theatres, stadia, offices, deprtment stores etc etc.) Always be aware of where you will go in the event of anything major.
Applies at home as well. KNOW which windows you can open upstairs. Tell the kids or anyone that lives there, where to get out if required.
One point on planes. Why do they still persist with life jackets. Very few planes have ditched at sea in a survivable fashion.

Best advice: apply for every frequent flyer program you can find - regardless of whatever mileage you have/don't have on it: travel as a single with hand carry only and show your card that you are a frequent flyer of that airline. Be bold and ask the check-in agent for an upgrade. She can only say no. If the flight is full and families want to sit together in coach you have a good chance of being bumped up. Works well on Arab airlines where women don't want to sit next to a Western male, for example, or when flights are overbooked.
If you are in an airline-related industry (cargo, air express) that's the best. I've travelled the world on AD75% discounted economy tickets in first class because of being in the industry.
That may not be possible for all of course. I use a local small travel agent in Manila for my flight arrangements these days. They are a GSA (General Sales Agent) for most Asia and Asia-Pacific airlines. Lucille my delectable contact tells the airline I am a very important client of hers, I am on an urgent business trip and she needs to get me upgraded, can the airline help.
In other words the agent is using his ticketing muscle to get you the upgrade. I have never paid more than economy fare to travel out of Manila to anywhere via business class at least using this system. More airlines than you think take off overbooked in coach with with excess seats in business and first and they don't really care who's in them, you just have to ask.
Example: couple of months ago I was flying Royal Air Brunei Manila- Brunei- Darwin. Sir we have a large family with an expectant lady and they would like to have the whole of Row 10. We invite you to move to seat 4b in First Class with our compliments (only problem is you can't get a drink on Royal Brunei, being a strict Muslim airline, but they are happy to dole out Canada Dry Cola to those of the cognoscenti with sufficient foresight to have accidentally come across a bottle of Jack in their hand-carry, well my goodness me how about that).
If you have frequent flyer points why not just buy a coach ticket and buy the upgrade with the points?

When flying solo or on business I have always managed to get an upgrade.
My other tip is dress smartly. Suit, Tie, shiny shoes and tidy hair, no face fuzz. Nice broad smile, posh accent, and say "If there any upgrades available or required on the flight I would be most grateful if I could be considered" They will mark your check in as "suitable upgrade"
With the wife and kids? forget it. Jeans? take a hike. Facial Hair? no chance.
The only thing to get special treatment there is to ask for a special diet. Vegetarian, Halal or Kosher is always better than the standard gloop served up to the cattle classes.

Why indeed? Especially all European flights? The English Channel may look wide from the cliffs at Dover but it appears like a wide river at a cruising altitude.
I don't know of any deliberate ditching of a commercial plane in the last 50 years or any where lifejackets would have been any use. (Hong Kong jumbo slid off end of runway, African 767 was a highjack accident close to shore).
Apart from the lifejackets you should see all the rafts and survival paraphenalia we lug around. Unfortunately its not easy to do a cost/benefit calculation (like Ford and their Pinto fuel tank) because there are so few incidents relative to total number of flights and by experience each event has been almost totally different in cause and effect.
The Civil Aviation Authority tell us to carry lifejackets, so we do. It would be a brave airline that pursues the removal, I can just see the headline now "XX Air Skimps On Safety Equipment".

How true that is to so many things where burueacracy is involved. Often, rule designed for a bygone age carry on until someone brave enough or able to think out of the box challenges the status quo. As for dimming lights, although I accept the logic about helping night vision in case of an accident, I think this also falls into the category of a regulation devised in the early days of commercial flight and no one has challenged it.
The same unthinking bureaucrats were behind the closure of the roads around Tower Bridge when that protestor was camped up on the crane. I am sure these people would close down London if the first ever plane flight was only now to go over London - in case the plane crashed on London!

The Wright brothers' plane is highly likely to have crashed if it first flew over London: no way would it get a certificate now. I have to say that if someone suggested starting from scratch now with the kind of air traffic levels there are currently over SW London it would be hard to get people to agree. I hate this aspect of staying there the few times a year I have to because my quality of life is so reduced by the noise. But since it crept up and people grew used to it it is tolerated, probably not even noticed by residents. I also can't get used to the awful air quality (makes my eyes sting), but people I know who live there don't notice.

On a Motoring theme - note when you are driving whether the kerbs are square (often where there is a footpath) or bevelled (mostly where there is no footpath).
Could help your reaction if you needed to get off the road in an emergency offside or nearside - and is a useful link if you have to do a commentary.
