Peugeot 207 (2006 – 2012) Review

Peugeot 207 (2006 – 2012) At A Glance

3/5

+The spirit of the 205 revived. Packed with personality. Fun to drive, safe, and decent quality.

-No design classic. Escalating reports of swamped wiring loom failures. Vital to clear bulkhead vent well drains regularly.

Insurance Groups are between 5–26
On average it achieves 87% of the official MPG figure

The 207 has a big job to do. It has to follow Peugeot's best selling cars ever: the 206 and the 205. It has to be loved. Being bigger than a 206 (actually the same size as the old 306), it has to sell for more money. And it has to win hearts and minds of buyers who might otherwise have plumped for the new Clio.

There's no bargain basement 207. Though prices weren't set at the launch they later came in at "from £8,995", which is £1,500 more than the cheapest FIAT Grande Punto. If you want a ‘Two O' for less, the 206 will continue alongside for a while, like the 205 did after the launch of the 106.

At least you get a lot for your money in the base model 207. Dubbed the ‘Urban' it comes equipped with unexpected kit like a switchable passenger airbag, side airbags, remote control central locking with deadlocks, three rear 3-point seatbelts with outer belt force limiters and a comfortable centre rear seat with adequate headroom.

Peugeot 207 (2006 – 2012) handling and engines

You'll get for your £8,500 a 1.4 litre 75bhp petrol engine, electric front window (driver's one-touch), split-folding 60/40 rear seats, three adjustable rear head restraints which disappear onto the seat-backs, a steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake, a stereo radio CD player, both driver and passenger seat height adjusters, ABS with EBD and EBA, a really nice, solid upper dash in non-reflective black, 15" steel wheels and trims with 185/65 R15 tyres, and a full-size spare.

And funnily enough the 1.4 petrol is the peach of the range. The engine itself is sweet as a nut; willing and free-revving. The gear ratios are well chosen. While the steering, ride and handling are spot on. It turns into corners well, grips like a homophobe's handshake, and puts a smile on your face.

The 110bhp 1.6 is a lot faster, of course. But that doesn't actually make it more fun, just faster fun. And you may occasionally find yourself hitting the rev limiter in 3rd, as we did on at least one occasion. Push it really hard and the electronics will finally wag their finger at you and put an end to the stupidity before any harm is done. But they are so far from rotten old spoilsports in the way the do this that you won't find yourself looking for the ESP ‘Off' button.

In contrast, the two diesels we drove were mildly disappointing. This 110bhp 1.6 16v HDI would normally be my engine of choice because it's the most undiesel-like diesel I know. It revs to just under 5,000, which is further than most petrol car drivers ever go, and makes the 1.6 16v 206 HDI by far the most fun car in the 206 range. But the two engines were simply to young and too tight to joyfully release the power and torque they will later be capable of delivering. So, though they had more punch uphill than the 1.6 petrol, and on paper offer a slightly quicker 0 - 60, the diesels just weren't yet lively enough to offer the fun factor of the petrol engines.

They will eventually, though. Once they're properly run-in. And with nearly 30mph per 1,000 rpm in 5th will be a lot more restful and a lot more economical on motorways.

However, the conclusion about the 207 is where I began. You'll probably be able to pay around £13,000 for a 1.6 HDI 110 GT on 17" wheels with 205/45 tyres. But pay £8,500 for a 1.4 Urban and you'll easily have just as much fun.

Full specifications

With a height and reach adjustable steering wheel and height adjustable seats for both driver and passenger, everyone in the front can get comfortable. But some drivers will find the top of the steering wheel obscuring the top of the instruments when it's in the ideal driving position. Ride quality is excellent and even deliberately putting a wheel in a pothole hardly upset it at all.

Introduction of a new 6-Speed manual gearbox and a new Euro 5 HDi diesel engine. 207 Sport HDi 110 hatchback and SW Sport and Outdoor HDi 110 models replaced by new versions fitted with a new 6-speed manual gearbox and a more powerful HDi 112 bhp diesel engine.

This new 1.6 litre HDi 112 FAP diesel engine meets the requirements of the Euro 5 emission standards and benefits from a number of improvements over the current 110 bhp unit. These include increased performance in terms of driveability and responsiveness, as well as quieter operation, while at the same time reducing CO2emissions.

Thanks to its new hi-tech design, this new four cylinder engine with a capacity of 1,560 cm 3 and eight valves, has a maximum torque output of 270 Nm at 1,750 rpm, an increase of 12.5% over the current engine and, during overboost, 285 compared to 260 Nm. It also has a very wide operating range with high levels of torque available at all times, ensuring good driveability and reduced fuel consumption on a day to day basis (since the user can drive more often at lower engine speeds): 135 Nm from 1000 rpm, 242 at 1500 rpm, 270 from 1750 to 2000 and 224 Nm at 3500 rpm. Its maximum power output is 112 bhp at 3600 rpm.

Peugeot 207 Sport models also benefit from improvements to the standard specification with the fitment of dark tinted rear windows and rear electric windows on the five-door hatchback and SW versions.

What to watch out for

01-01-0001:

One report of rear damper failure on 207 1.6 16V SE 5 door after 3 months and 1,100 miles, not speed hump related. Also driver's window closing noisily and morning brake grind from rust on the discs.

End of plastic dipstick of 1.6 HDI engine can break and drop into sump requiring removal of sump to retrieve it.

One August 2007 report of external gear selector mechanism problems on 1.6 Sport, though seems to have been confined to a small batch.

'Whirring whine' from 1.4HDI may be failing timing belt tensioner, which is a roller bearing device like the idler pulley, but with a reddish rubber/nylon damper. Gates cambelt kits include this part. Wise also to replace waterpump which is driven by the timing belt.

2007 207 1.4 16V (95 bhp) Peugeot engines can suffer early ignition coil failure in cold conditions.

207 5dr hatch 16v 90 Sport purchased 02/09/ 06. Problems encountered by 15/8/08 include: 2 New Oxygen sensors fitted different times; 1 New Alternator; 1 Cigar Lighter; 1 Rear Screen washer wiper pump; Plus Boot would not open; 2 New Steering racks.

Unexplained sudden cutting out of 1.6HDI in August 2010 resolved as follows: 1. Reset ECU; 2. Replaced High Pressure Pump. FAP checked ok; 3. As no fault code found on third visit Fuel Filter replaced; 4. Engine Fuse Box replaced.

19-03-2011:

Eolys fluid to regenerate the diesel particulate filters of 1.6HDIs is stored in a container inside the rear wheel arch where it is fairly vulnerable to stone damage. Numewrous cases of the container splitting and depositing the carcinogenic Eolys fluid on readers driveways.

29-03-2011:

One case of a stretched timing chain requiring replacement on a 207GT.

16-01-2012:

Turbo problem on 1.6TDCI/1.6HDI DV6 appears to be getting worse: Reader reports 1.6TDCI at 56,000 miles: "Car lost power plus growl/whine indicating turbo trouble - drove gently 3 miles to local garage where tech confirmed - pulled inlet rubber pipe and demonstrated wear in turbo bearings. He is quite clued up and knows a lot about this problem. There is a huge amount of evidence of similar cases in the Backroom forum and others, and there is clearly a serious problem affecting this engine. The cure is not just a new turbo, but new oil pipe, pump, pick-up, etc etc. Ford dealer prices for repairs are £1,200 for parts alone. There was a Ford TSB45/2008 about this. Newer engines (2008+) have modified parts. Apparently you can get a new turbo for £350 plus £120 for a "kit" of modified pipes/pick-up unions etc. from Transitpartsuk (International Parts Ltd) to fit next week. eBay supplier TransitpartsUK

08-02-2012:

On the older 1.4 belt cam engines, thermostat housing failures seem to lead to coolant losses that can result in overheating and consequential head gasket failure.

11-03-2012:

Now thought that low pressure in the fuel pump of the 1.6THP 150 leads to low pressure in the oil pump, starving the timing chain of oil on start-up and leading to stretching of the chain. That could also be why they rattle on start-up.

22-03-2012:

Steering fault on 2009 Peugeot 207 1.4 Sport from Peugeot dealer on 11th Feb 2012 at 14,169 miles. Fixed by another Peugeot dealer under warranty. Then head gasket oil leak, again fixed by another Peugeot dealer under warranty. (From Ask.)

29-08-2012:

56 reg 207 1.4 16v always had a problem when starting from cold - engine hesitates for a couple of seconds and the revs drop right down before accelerating again. Now getting worse. Might be coils problem above. Might be old 206 throttle position sensor problem. Apparently might be curable by a software download. See www.peugeotforums.com.

31-12-2012:

'Gong' sound means that car battery is failing to hold sufficient charge and needs to be replaced.

12-05-2013:

Reader reports three consecutive failures of the plastic bag of Eolys DPF regeneration fluid for his 207 1.6HDI. Apparently the surface plastic of the bag breaks up.

09-03-2015:

Peugeot 207 petrol models can suffer a lot of expensive faults after 7 year and 100,000 miles.

15-04-2015:

Nightmare series of problems with a Peugeot 207 1.4 VTi SW: 'Antipollution' and 'Engine management' lights came on and car had reduced power when the engine reached its operating temperature. While cold, the car performed normally, although the lights were showing. Mileage on this car is currently 56,000 and previously had the timing set and dephaser cleaned by Peugeot agents at 49,000 for similar problems. After a fault diagnosis, the timing was set again and a new VVT solenoid valve fitted at a cost of £320 which included 4 hours of labour costs. The lights appeared again the day after the car was returned, oil was leaking from the engine head and the engine was extremely noisy when cold and idling. A faulty cam dephasing pulley was diagnosed and replaced at a further £520 including 8 hours of labour.

14-06-2015:

Wiring loom failed on 4 year old 207. Quoted £2,400 to replace it of which Peugeot would pay half.

25-06-2015:

Report of another wiring loom failure, this one on a 25,000 mile 2009 Peugeot 207. New ECU costing £700 fitted in May 2015. Then failed MoT due to failed sidelights. Apparently coolant had got into the fusebox and rotted some of the pins and the wiring. Peugeot will only supply a complete new wiring loom at a cost of £900, plus the cost of fitting it. No goodwill if the car is repaired at an independent garage.

12-11-2015:

Fault with 4-speed automatic transmission of Peugeot 207 1.6 SW: Under certain conditions, a warning light appears with a clunk from gearbox. According to driver's manual, this means gearbox is stuck in 3rd gear. Resets itself when engine restarted. Fault is known to Peugeot as it is described in handbook. According to internet forums, other similar vehicles have same fault and software update could be solution. Automatic gearbox has been checked by specialist and has no fault.

02-01-2016:

Failure of rear lightbulb led to fitting of replacement wiring harness kit which itself failed because male and female parts of connector suffered failed earth pins. This led to need to to replace entire rear light unit.

02-12-2016:

Report that flooded bulkhead vent wells of 2012 Peugeot 207 due to blocked vent well drains led to swamped electronics and a £3,500 repair bill of which Peugeot offered to pay half. See: 4-12-2013; 19-1-2014; 14-6-2015 and 25-6-2015. Vital to clear debris from vent well drains regularly.

27-02-2017:

Complaint of PAS of 2011 Peugeot 207 failing.

24-02-2018:

Report that screen wash reservoir can crack if plain water in it freezes. That then deposits the contents on the wiring loom, causing mayhem. Vital to use screenwash with sufficient anti-freeze.
