Volkswagen Golf Plus (2005 - )

Good: A taller, roomier, more versatile version of the Golf Mk V. Good ride and tidy handling. The 2.0 TDI 140 DSG is the one to have.
Bad: Slightly thirstier than the equivalent Golf. The 1.6 FSI and 1.9 TDI 105 are unremarkable performers.

Double height boot floor, standard from SE upwards, allows more adaptable stowage and a maximum capacity of 505 litres with the rear seats in place.

What's Bad

No 200bhp GTI, of course. Golf Plus Dune not four wheel drive like Altea freetrack.

What to Watch Out For

On 1.9 TDI 105s both a clutch release bearing fault and a hesitation on running fault with no cure available from VW at 10-10-06.

See Golf V and Touran entries.

Updated 21-9-2009: ESP warning light can indicate Fault Code "Boost Pressure Sensor G201". This is embedded inside Teves Mk 60 ABS systems and requires replacement of ABS control unit/pump. Seems to be age-related, occurring mainly in 3 - 5 year old cars. Does not necessarily lead to an MoT failure. If car has been VAG maintained, VAG will meet 100% of replacement cost. If not VAG will still help towards £1,500 cost of replacement.

Also minor problems with hestitation when pulling away and car very prone to stalling.

On 6-speed twin shaft manuals the gearchange from 1st to 2nd can become still. First stage dealer cure is to replace the transmission oil. If that fails, it needs a synchro ring replacing. So if your box stiffens up, make sure it is attended to before the warranty expires.

Check 2.0TDIs regularly for coolant loss. VW has become aware of a problem with the alloy used to make the cylinder head, causing the head to become porous allowing coolant to leak in to the engine. Means a new head at a cost of £1,700 plus labour at VAG franchise rates. By July 2009, cylinder head failures of 1.9 and 2.0 diesels were becoming increasingly common.
