Peugeot 107s, Citroen C1s and Toyota Aygos are becoming extremely popular as classless, low tax, low insurance, low running cost cars.

The 107 was the UK’s best-selling low-emissions vehicle in 2007 (SMMT). It currently has a three-model choice with the top-of-the-range model in the 107 ‘Urban Move’. This version is being enhanced from June 2008. Available in three- or five-door body styles, the 107 ‘Urban Move’ features air conditioning, a rev counter and metallic paint as standard equipment, over and above the generic 107 attributes that include 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Powered by an 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine producing just 109 g/km of CO2, Urban Move also features driver and passenger airbags, electric power steering and radio/CD player with MP3 connectivity. Choice of three metallic paint finishes: Zircon Grey, Antigua Blue or Carbon Grey, an ‘Urban Move’ logo vertically on the leading edge of the rear window and new Matrix blue seat trim. New Metallic blue surrounds to speedometer, air vents and to the interior door pulls make for a distinctive and modern environment. The 107 Urban Move continues to be priced at £8,295 for the three-door model, at just £540 more than the standard ‘Urban’ model.

In addition, the unit features a USB socket to enable an iPod or any MP3 player to be connected – the iPod display is transferred to the radio screen. Prices start from £7,755 with availability limited to 1,000 vehicles that uniquely feature KISS livery decals along the sides of the 107.

The Urban model has standard features over the Urban Lite that include body-coloured items, electric front windows, side airbags and remote central door locking, and the choice of either manual and 2-Tronic (an electronically controlled manual that operates as an automatic) transmission.

The Verve model is a top-of-the-range Special Edition that includes as standard air conditioning, 14" alloy wheels and a rev counter, and exclusive availability of the new Mandalin Orange paintwork (as pictured).

What's Bad

Water leaks into load area via extractor vent. Have also been water leaks into load area and rear via misfitted rear door and hatch seals or rear light seals, otherwise reader feedback so far very positive.

What to Watch Out For

Feedback welcome.

'Whirring whine' from 1.4HDI may be failing timing belt tensioner, which is a roller bearing device like the idler pulley, but with a reddish rubber/nylon damper. Gates cambelt kits include this part. Wise also to replace waterpump which is driven by the timing belt.

One report of a transmission oil leak on an Aygo (same car).

Exhaust back boxes may only last 2 years before rusting through.

Water pump failures common at about 3 years old.

Reports of leaking waterpumps on 1.0 petrol engines.

Clutches seem to let in water, leading to surface corrosion and premature wear. Can last as little as two and a half years. Becoming quite a big issue at £550 a time.

Rear wheel brake cylinders prone to failure. One case after 4 years and 4,000 miles. Another just 2 months from new.

On 5 door models the glue holding the rear door windows to the hinge eventually fails and the windows fall out.
