(SLO76) hjforum1486580 Sun, 05 May 2024 20:39:50 +0000 How about this? It’s an approved used car from a local main dealer and under warranty until 2028. Generally good cars these, but depreciation is heavy so long term ownership is the best option to get value. Make sure it has a full Kia service record or that lovely warranty is worthless. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202405019270419 The Suzuki Vitara is another worthy long term prospect. This is essentially new and although it’s a hybrid it’s only a mild hybrid so you won’t even notice anything beyond a bit more pep and slightly better economy. These don’t really go wrong. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202404299168431 I was looking at these recently. They’re fantastically reliable, very good on fuel, smooth and relaxing to drive and extremely popular with taxi fleets so resale is a doddle and at strong money. Hybrid again but no concerns with reliability at all. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202404309209185 I rate the Skoda Octavia too. This looks good value, but check that warranty has a decent claims limit or it’s worthless. Nice to drive, lots of room and very decent on fuel. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202403067267928 Motoring discussion SLO76 Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198128 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198128&v=t&m=1486580 Advice on replacing my car in UK - sellers market? (Adampr) hjforum1486575 Sun, 05 May 2024 19:27:43 +0000 Looking at my own criteria, I would suggest three possible dealers.  Bear.in mind I know nothing about any of them: RM Fisher (Lancaster) J&A Rigbye (Chorley) Accrington Garages (Accrington). I would also note that Swansway Honda in Bolton have a nice looking Civic Tourer.  They will be all pointy shoes and coffee machines, but it might be worth it for the car. (Adampr) hjforum1486574 Sun, 05 May 2024 18:52:57 +0000 I was recently looking for a new car and visited a combination of independent dealers, franchises and car supermarkets.  Like you, I tend to buy from franchised dealers where the quality of stock is better. I would recommend avoiding car supermarkets.  They work on tiny margins and all of their profit is in finance, extended warranties etc.  They will desperately try to sell you things you don't want. Unless you know of a good one, I would also avoid independent dealers.  Most buy their cars from auction and know nothing about them.  They have a bad reputation, but many are generally honest, they just don't know what they're selling.   That leaves you with the franchises again.  They vary massively but, by and large, the more prestigious the brand, the more irritating the dealer. What I found was that a franchise dealer in a rural area that is not part of a bigger group seems to be the most relaxed.  The dowdier or more farmer-y the cars, the less annoying the sales people.   I had a genuinely enjoyable time at a Subaru dealer in a small market town, and a perfectly pleasant experience at a Suzuki dealer in a small City.  A Suzuki dealer that was part of a large local group, though, was the very typical dealer experience. So three things to look out for: 1.  Not a glamorous brand 2.  Not part of a group 3.  Preferably a rural location In your position, I would be looking for a good dealer before deciding what car to buy. (UncleBlobby) hjforum1486572 Sun, 05 May 2024 18:09:25 +0000 Apologies, I live near Preston, Lancashire.  I asked my local repair  garage for recommendations and their honest advice was "Don't buy a car from anywhere round here, they are all crooks". So I'm willing to travel.  I looked at Motorpoint, Burnley but they lack Estates and its a dice roll with any second hand dealers.  If I can't afford new I'd prefer to reduce risk by buying approved dealer cars.  But I'm looking for a dealer that wants to sell what customers want not what they want to sell them.  As far as I can tell the only reason anyone buys cars from dealers now is for PCP deals.  But I don't want a second mortgage.   Motoring discussion UncleBlobby Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198128 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198128&v=t&m=1486572 Advice on replacing my car in UK - sellers market? (UncleBlobby) hjforum1486570 Sun, 05 May 2024 17:34:57 +0000 Like most people I know I was hanging on to my 10 year old diesel KIA as long as possible having heard how bad the UK car market is today.   Sadly someone driving on wrong side of road hit me head on writing the car off and nearly killing me just before Christmas.  4 months and a lot of hospital time later I've received 3K for my old car from the insurers and need to replace it as it was written off.  I've had terrible issues with second hand cars in the past and have bought ex demo cars from dealerships to avoid this for the last 20 years with success.  However,  I visited a few of the cheaper local dealers (Kia, Skoda, Ford) and the prices of new or nearly new budget cars is now insane (30-40k new, not much cheaper for ex demos).  All dealers try and push EVs, I don't want an EV.  Or they try and push hybrids, see EVs.  Most dealers no longer even know the actual price of their cars and instead quote monthly payments under PCP deals that benefit only the dealer not the buyer.  Most dealers I visited were empty of customers as a result.  I'm desperate for a new car living in a village with no public transport and I need it for work.  But it's been so disheartening I've given up trying.  My wife and I both work full time on professional salaries and we cant even afford a budget brand,  How other people manage I've no idea? I'd welcome recommendations for any dealer or car make that was different?  By different I mean doesn't push what customers don't want, doesn't only offer good deals to PCP customers and welcomes someone who can afford to pay cash by offering them good deals on diesel/petrol cars. I'm looking for a reliable estate, certainly not an electric and preferably not hybrid, budget is about 15k.   Motoring discussion UncleBlobby Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198128 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198128&v=t&m=1486570 Fun 2 Seater Sports Car between 6k and 10k (Adampr) hjforum1486569 Sun, 05 May 2024 16:30:08 +0000 Oh, John, you do make me laugh.   Motoring discussion Adampr Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198106 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198106&v=t&m=1486569 Fun 2 Seater Sports Car between 6k and 10k (John F) hjforum1486568 Sun, 05 May 2024 16:21:21 +0000 I don’t think any of the cars we are discussing in this thread will be running when they are 24 years old That's because nobody has mentioned the reliable durable late model (Canley onwards) TR7 which, if cared for (preferably Ziebarted) from new like mine was (it's now 44yrs old), has outlasted thousands of rot-prone MX5s - which cease to be fun when the brown cancer becomes terminal.   Plenty to choose from...... https://classics.honestjohn.co.uk/cars-for-sale/search/Triumph/TR7/ ......and cheap to run as classic insurance is peanuts and there is no annual VED or MoT to trouble you.  Motoring doesn't get much cheaper.   Motoring discussion John F Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198106 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198106&v=t&m=1486568 Honda CR-V - Suggested price for CR-V 2009 automatic (macbook) hjforum1486566 Sun, 05 May 2024 14:39:56 +0000 I also have 225/65 tyres, and as Good Year all season, they should be more soft than any summer tyres. (pd) hjforum1486565 Sun, 05 May 2024 14:35:07 +0000 I should have said - I'm currently the happy owner of a 2016 MINI Cooper (auto - my first), with no real justification for changing it, but that doesn't stop me thinking about it :) I do fancy a new one - mine has got climate but very little else, I even have to take my hands off the wheel to change the radio volume. But even the base spec new model has loads of kit, plus the advantage of a decent amount of rubber in the tyres to soften the ride. However I do like the idea of a 1 series, and if it had the new engine then there wouldn't be a drop in performance compared to my current MINI - it would cancel out the additional weight (I think, obviously no actual figures to back that up). The BMW 1 Series range isn't exactly short of engine/power options, Well... after the 118i with 136ps it's a bit of a leap up to the 128ti with 265ps. There's no 2 litre 120i like there was with the previous version of the 1 series. Seems a bit odd. Maybe BMW think owners will either be retired types wanting a car that's 'nippy' with the BMW 'prestige' and handling (rather like a Lexus) or the 'boy [or girl) racers' at any age who want a very hot hatch and can afford the high cost of purchase and ownership. Fewer and fewer makes are now doing 'warm' hatches, partly because they are no longer affordable (including running costs, e.g. insurance) to the same lot who used to buy cars like the mid 2000s Civic Type R, earlier gen Focus STs, etc.  Many makes are also rationalising their lineups to reduce costs. I suspect that apart from the German makes, the hot hatch era will be soon over, whether EVs take over fully in the next 5 years or so or not. MG4 X-Power? Hyundai N range? Toyota Yaris GR? Volvo Ex30 Performance? Plenty of hot hatches out there and more coming soon like GTi versions of VW I cars, Cupras etc. Looks quite healthy to me. I wouldn’t expect the ride of a Mk3 CRV to be harsh and wonder if your shocks are aftermarket items? You mention the Mazda CX-30, funnily enough before this CRV came along I considered buying a new Mazda CX-5 and test drove one.   It was OK but I was quite pleased to return home in my 22 year old Mercedes CLK that I had at the time.  I suppose my problem is that I don't believe modern cars offer any significant improvement over an older well maintained car from a good manufacturer.   Motoring discussion johncyprus Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198121 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198121&v=t&m=1486564 BMW 1 Series - Getting new MINI engine? Coincidentally enough, my niece and her husband, who have been working abroad for a few years, came back to live in the UK recently and because it would have cost so much to have their two cars transported back here, they sold them abroad and went looking for a Mazda when they returned to the UK. They had a butcher's at a CX-3 and as you suggest, they found it too cramped ( though to be fair, they're both much taller than myself or my wife). As a result of that disappointment they opted for a CX30 instead. I've seen a CX-3 parked outside someone's house not far from here and I did notice that the side windows appear to be rather shallow, so perhaps visibility is an issue too, though we obviously won't know for sure till we've clapped eyes on one in anger.  I'll also check out that thread you mention.  Motoring discussion argybargy Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198110 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198110&v=t&m=1486555 Car insurance claim 2 years on (mcb100) hjforum1486553 Sun, 05 May 2024 08:54:12 +0000 We had similar last week - a no fault RTC on January 2nd, 2023, car repaired (eventually, due to parts unavailability) and no excess paid. I swapped details, but I believed he gave me a fake phone number.  We both drove to a safe position, and he drove further down the road, so I never actually got a picture of his car. I had never been in an accident before, so I know this was my mistake. However, as he admitted it at the time, I didn't think I would have an issue, and I also had a witness.  I spoke to my witness around 2 months later, and they told me the insurance company spoke to her on the phone and they were going to send her a form in the post, which at the time she said she never got.  I never claimed for injury, just repair of my car. It's been over 2 years since I had 2 new phones since then, so I doubt I'll even have her phone number. The insurance company should have this as well as her address if they sent her a form.    The insurance company fixed my car, and I thought this was an end to the matter.  I now had a letter saying the third party's insurance company has asked for evidence to prove his client was involved in the accident and they not been able to contact my witness.   I'm shocked, as it's now been over 2 years. Why now? Should I report it to the police?  If I can't provide any evidence now, will I be forced to pay for the repair? All I had was a dashcam showing this person indicating to go left, and then a bang to my car around 20 seconds later. I never had a rear dashcam.   Motoring discussion JOJOJ Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198125 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198125&v=t&m=1486540 Honda CR-V - Suggested price for CR-V 2009 automatic (macbook) hjforum1486539 Sat, 04 May 2024 18:01:36 +0000 Can I ask how much you paid for your CR-V? Is the insurance not give your the market value of the car at the time of being stolen, why people have traumas, if they can buy something similar if they want for the insurance money back, or am I missing something? Mine is a EX with just about every extra that was available. I had a major 100,000 service done when I got her changing all fluids etc and my trusted mechanic told me she was in excellent condition with negligible corrosion. I’ve just had her serviced again after 9,000 trouble free miles and hope for another year of trouble free motoring. You’ve got one of the best cars out there, if the body is solid you should get at least another five years out of her. I’d keep her; you have stress free motoring with proper instrumentation and controls and a proper ignition key, none of this nonsense of keyless entry. You won’t have to go through the trauma of waking up to find some thief has stolen your modern car as the thief’s ignore the older CRVs. I would have to be deranged to sell my car and get something more modern because the CRV does everything I need and more. It drives well, I get well over 30 mpg and I have adaptive cruise control, emergency braking etc etc and those lovely 17” wheels that float over the pot holes. Go on YouTube and see what Scotty Kilmer has to say about the older CRVs, he recommends them. I hadn’t really thought about selling the car.  A Quick Look at autotrader suggests the nice ones are around £2k from private folk. Mine is not a nice one. The paint work is in terrible condition and the rear arches are starting to rust,  lots of bubbling  I suspect I might get between £500 and £1000 for it and at that level getting another years motoring out of it is probably a better option. Plus I could save another £5k towards the car budget.  Plus I could win the lottery and the car may get through the mot in 2025.  Motoring discussion newguy2015 Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198106 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198106&v=t&m=1486533 Ford Fiesta - Fiesta 1.5 diesel back box advise please (elekie&a/c doctor) hjforum1486531 Sat, 04 May 2024 12:00:09 +0000 That’s one way of doing it . In fact it's almost falling apart. Currently installed is a one piece all the way from the down pipe/exhaust manifold to the back box. All in one piece, pipe and back box all  in one. I notice that all that's available from motor factors etc is just the rear box with a slotted sleeve presumably to fit over the pipe from the engine ? I would just like it confirmed that it's normal just to cut through the existing exhaust pipe and fit the replacement box over it ? Otherwise we may as well just thrash it 'safely' in 2nd. that is exactly what an Italian tune up is, thrashing at high revs in first and second and hold for a while, that will do the job, no need to rev high in other gears, it brings temp up enough in the valves/head and piston crowns to burn off the carbon. job done.   Technical matters Bolt Technical matters http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198109 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198109&v=t&m=1486528 Honda CR-V - Suggested price for CR-V 2009 automatic (Xileno) hjforum1486526 Sat, 04 May 2024 11:44:16 +0000 It's a bitter pill to swallow when you've spent a lot of money on maintaining a vehicle but unfortunately that doesn't necessarily inflate its value.   I run an old 2007 Focus. In the last seven months I've spent more than its market value on maintenance - service, MOT, rocker cover oil leak, immobiliser repair and two new front wheel bearings. The car's value hasn't increased, all it means is should I sell it then it's saleable.   That's just life, running any vehicle is expensive. Old car = repairs, new car = depreciation or monthlies.   It's also worth remembering the old saying that something is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay. The valuation to the owner is unfortunately irrelevant. Look on Autotrader or similar sites to see what other cars are going for.     Motoring discussion Xileno Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198121 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198121&v=t&m=1486526 Honda CR-V - Suggested price for CR-V 2009 automatic (macbook) hjforum1486522 Sat, 04 May 2024 11:30:40 +0000 No the advisories was just now April 2024. The previous MOT April 2023, there was no any advisories, and this has inspected in the same garage, is it frame suddenly corroded significantly by1 year? I don’t think so. I have planned to inspect this in May, and see if this is just surface rust, which I believe it is, as there is plenty of CR-Vs with the same age or older, here in UK as well as in much harsher weather like Canada and Some USA states, and there is plenty of people still happy with the car and did not see plenty of people complaining about frame corrosion. Besides one garage will advise the frame is corroded and fail the MOT, where other says it’s surface corrosion, and the frame structure is not affected. The number of people, the number of different options, that’s the conclusion. The wife not liking it would not be a good enough reason. I would tend to agree, but going by various other threads including SLO's, it isn't a universally shared view! Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened. In April 2025 that could be an MOT failure which would probably mean sc***ping a 16 year old car. Its not an advisory I would want to see on a car I was buying. My assumption on this would be that it is just surface rust, which wouldn't alarm me too much (though I would get under the car and check thoroughly). But I could see this advisory scaring off many potential buyers, so it seems inexplicable to me that the OP (who seems to be either a mechanic or at least mechanically minded) has chosen to ignore it. Given it was noted in the 2023 MOT (if I'm reading the thread right) and the OP has spent quite a lot of money, including on superficial and unnecessary stuff like diamond cut alloys, surely spending a little time under the car with a wire brush and a modest sum of money on some kind protective coating would be worthwhile (especially since the original intention was to keep the car longer term)? Or alternatively if I went to see a car that the buyer had spent quite a bit of money on in a relatively short ownership I would be asking myself why sell it? The wife not liking it would not be a good enough reason. Look at WBAC or other buyer price and add a margin that you might trim later on in a haggle with a potential buyer It also works the other way. Clever buyers will be putting your reg into WBAC to see what is being offered. They will then be negotiating as close to that figure as possible. Its just the same as we did in the 70's and 80's using Parkers guide off the newsagents rack. Think Parkers guide still exists but the last time I looked you have use the interweb and pay. Last couple of private sales I have made (using Autotrader) I simply looked for near identical cars (not difficult since both were Micra's) and priced ours a few pounds below those. Worked a treat, both sold within 12 hours of placing the adverts at satisfactory prices. Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened.
